Heavy Construction - Hardware jams Streamthrough Hardware Jams 2025-09-01 | The sounds of construction and industry are everywhere. From droning engines to wailing sirens, pounding hammers to whirring gears - these sounds are often thought of as unpleasant, but can you discover the beauty in them?There are two ways to do this weekend’s challenge, depending on your setup. The first option is to make a jam using samples from field recordings, construction sounds etc. You can make them yourself or find them online (I’ll post a couple of links in a comment). Make sure the recordings you use are copyright free. If you don’t have a sampler in your setup, the second option is to make a jam inspired by this sort of soundscape. Maybe you can make a beat sounding like an engine? Maybe some clever sound design will make a synth sound like a drill? Get creative.Whichever way you do this challenge, focus on beauty. This isn’t a challenge where you prep for five minutes and then bash out a jam, this is one where your jam IS the programming from scratch. You might want to start by programming a bassline or drum track, then add additional things to it as you go. Or you might use your synth’s functions to get it to generate a random pattern, and use that as the basis.Whatever happens, whatever approach you take, at the five minute mark you’re done! For this weekend’s challenge we take a dive into drones - not the flying kinds, but musical drones, sustained notes or sounds. The challenge is to make a jam with some droning elements. You can go full experimental and make a minimalist jam with just drones. Or you can take a melodic approach and think of melodies contrasting movement and static elements (maybe research pedal points in music theory?). Or you could look at folk music for inspiration: bagpipes are a good example of a melodic instrument with drones.Drone day is an international celebration with people making drones all over the world. The Earwormhole Stream Hardware Jams 2025-05-12 | The Plants Part 3 - The Earwormhole 👂🪱🕳While the plant-et of the ewoks was in a state of calm, A black hole quietly moved through space, slowly approaching the little rock they called the moon of endor. The planet was swept away into the void but our understanding of black holes was wildly wrong. As the ewoks passed through the event horizon, they noticed a hypnotic, rhythmic sound emanating and slightly reverberating around through the woods. The sun they gained warmth and light from had disappeared and all that lit their path was strobed shadows through the trees, coming from the light that traveled along side the moon. While in a lost scientific platform, this new discovery known as an earwormhole had given birth to a technical number, shortened to "Tech. No. 303" by the imperial scientist remnants left after the battle of endor. Plants vs Ewoks Stream Hardware Jams 2025-05-05 | PLANTS vs EWOKS - Weekend ChallengeFollowing their mighty victory over the Humans and their disregard for peace last week, the Revenge of the Plants seemed complete. Indeed, they went on to conquer a large portion of the whole galaxy. Dense and impenetrable jungles and forests were growing everywhere and the Plants were devouring everything they came across. But little did they know that hidden away in the undergrowth of a little forest-covered planet, deep under their successful propagation, some surviving bipeds were beavering away on a revenge story of their own…Small, furry teddybear-like cute and cuddly creatures called Ewoks had gathered their homemade synthesisers and started to jam a mystical tune which slowly caused the dense foliage of the plants to recede and die away, allowing them to live freely and happily once more. The Streamthrough - Double or Half Hardware Jams 2025-02-04 | This weekend’s challenge is a bit of a blind challenge. Make a jam in whichever style and genre you prefer. Maximum length THREE AND A HALF minutes (not the usual five). In the streamthrough, we will play jams at either half or double their original speed. You don’t get to choose which, it will be totally random. In other words, make a jam that would work both slowed down or sped up. Pitch isn’t affected by the change of speed. Your jam will end up either as a frantic jam at less than two minutes or an extended jam for seven minutes. This might wreak havoc on your original ideas and sounds, but it also might bring out some things you wouldn’t have discovered with your usual workflow.Open to jams made this weekend. The Streamthrough - Italo Disco Hardware Jams 2025-01-13 | Italo disco is the ultimate cheesy ‘80s dance genre, born in Italy in the 70s and spread through Europe through the 80s, even reaching my home country of Finland. It’s disco powered by glittery synths, drum machines and dramatic, catchy melodies. Think lovesick lyrics, spacey vibes, and a touch of Euro-glam that’s impossible to take seriously — but even harder to resist!
