WET HEAVEN 2025-08-06 | Thought I'd record the range of stations I was able to pick up with this.
Some details,
I strung the AN-80 wire about 10 feet up on a caged playground. I assumed being in a park would get me as far away from RF as I could in this neighborhood. I used a XHDATA-109WB as my receiver (open to suggestions on a better model). Recorded headphone out of the XHDATA to an input on a Zoom H4n Pro handheld recorder. Did a memory scan and scanned through all the stations it held.

As you can see, it's a pretty disappointing mix of religious nonsense and third language programming (here in Canada). I had purchased a D109-WB model last year to get into Shortwave listening but seems as though I'm a decade or so too late for some of the good stuff.

Will repeat this set up later in the evening to see if I can grab different signals.

All of these are going in 4-stereo inputs to a Zoom L-12 mixer.

I had a good time making this one, I committed to doing it around noon and it's just nearly 1am on Saturday now and I'm uploading this, so I think I made some good time. Luckily, I had a tonne of self-shot footage I think works for a title menu, and musically, this came together fast enough and required only two pieces of gear so I was able to complete the concept in the kitchen while my partner recorded me. WET HEAVEN 2023-12-03 | i took the afternoon to finish this video edit for a 93bpm downtempo adjacent-climber id' been messing around with. i sourced a bunch of footage I've taken on my phone that existed on 'the cloud' and some handycam tape rips from over the last 8 or so years. the minilogue xd is doing the heavy lifting on the portamento-lead part, the juno chorus patch is on the mc707. arp is on the mini and the kick and percussion thru the tr8s.

WET HEAVEN - PHOENIX IN FLIGHT (CONVERGE COVER ON ROLAND HARDWARE)

WET HEAVEN 2022-02-28 | Walked into the music store the other day to buy a stereo cable for my gear and was greeted by their "Half Price Rentals Day" sign. Picked up this sweet SG with a maestro arm for $19 for the whole month and wanted to play something heavy on it when I got home.
My only reference for "Heavy" music is what I listened to in high school and I got to thinking whether I could program something like Converge into my hardware. I picked an "easier" tune off 2001's still fantastic Jane Doe , the closest thing off the album I could find some sort of familiarity to playing (it's the Mogwai-ness here) and started programming the tune bit by bit. I've cut this in half, timewise for the sake of the video as you' get the drift. Certainly not note by note by the book but was more focused on getting textures in the right places and filling everything out rather than playing the song the right way as it's always going to sound like a stretch on these.... so...

here's the map..

#ROLAND MC707 is driving everything, you'll see I go through and hit track by track, instrument by instrument to show what sounds I chose to work with. The #KORG Minilogue XD is MIDI out from MIDI 2 and just mimicking what lane/track 3 on the 707 is doing with a tonne of reverb. The drums are doubled out MIDI 1 from lane/track 1 into a #Roland TR8S broken up with lots of fuzz. so cleaner drums on the 707, angry drums on the tr8s. Blended in the mix.

The guitar is this rental #Epiphone SG, and believe it or not, right into that tiny #Roland Cube 20XL, on the "Metal Stack" setting. Zero fuss. I love that amp when it's clean, I love it heavy like this and I love that I only paid $20 for it. I'm running a fake send out of my mixer thru a #Korg KP3 for the delays.

Everything goes into the #Zoom L-12, each track is recorded to .WAV on an SD card, I'll dump those .wavs into Reaper and fine adjust levels a bit.
Then compile into Davinci Resolve with the video track my partner shot of me playing. and here we are.

certainly many limitations with hardware, and I doubt this is even half as fun as playing with a bunch of real people covering a Converge tune (can't replicate that) but for something I whipped up in an afternoon to 'see if I could', I'm pretty happy with the result.

HWJ Weekend Challenge - Secret Santa for GeeknGear

WET HEAVEN 2021-12-31 | I'm part of this great Facebook group called hardware jams and every weekend there's the equivalent of a writing prompt. participate if you want, I often can't pencil in the time, but if you do, you get the weekend to imagine, compose and record something completely new based upon that prompt. It's a lot of fun and stretches your equipment a little more than regular unprompted noodling, I find.

Anyways, there was a big Christmas deal and I went out of town right beforehand and missed being tagged in this weeks challenge, which was to create a jam inspired by the work of another member. I was drawn Oliver's name, who creates music under the soundcloud alias Geek'N'Gear (l will link this under all this text). I spent a little bit of time skimming through Oliver's different tunes and output. Some challenges are pretty cut and dry, but this one sent me on a couple curves. It's tough to decide what to focus on. Do you replicate the sound of this persons gear? the mood? Some of these jams are inspirations from OTHER things, so there's that thrown in all of it. And then surely, I can't do another humans musical 'vibe' justice from a half hour of skimming out different tracks, and a/b'ing my mixer to the browser audio.

I noticed right away a vibe in Oliver's music, and this is rushed version of my take on that vibe. I'm thinking of the cassette tape mega mixes I've found at goodwill, there's the bigger tune ones and then sometimes you find a tape and you don't recognize any of it but you like it, and that's what hjs soundcloud music reminded me of.

Happy Holidays 2021, think i got this in right before 2022.

WET HEAVEN 2021-12-05 | This week's prompt for the hardware jams f'book group was 'late night/early morning' and I thought it was a nice opportunity to noodle on the geetar. I recently purchased a used Roland Cube amp for a great deal and this is the stock clean + amp chorus recording out into the mixer. Nice sounding little amp. Anyways, the rest of the setup is a MC707 sequencing the bass side chained through a TR8S, some twinkly stuff on the Korg Minilogue XD, some bird noises, a big fat pad and another 'fragile' sounding keyboard. Guitar is a Squier Jagmaster. Recorded live in a go' straight into the Zoom L-12 mixer. Video compiled in Davinci Resolve.
