Hello to the Polyend Tracker Mini.Full playlist of jams here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3gylPYA6LNjHro2KGBKOBpAPeZu-qo0lThis is technically the second thing I've produced with the Polyend Tracker Mini but as the first one didn't have any live jamming and I wanted to submit to this weeks @HardwareJams challenge they're being posted in the wrong order.So after my frustrations with the Roland SP404 MkII I was looking at other sample based devices and the Tracker Mini popped up at a good price. I've was already curious about the tracker workflow so on a whim I bought it.So far I am really liking it. It is completely different to the SP404, that feels like an instrument whereas the tracker feels like a sequencer. It really easy to write songs on and features some powerful tools to help you do that but it isn't really an easy 'jamming' tool on it's own. In the future I think I'll try hooking up a midi keyboard or grid controller to see if that makes it more hands on.In the mean time the ability to sit on the sofa with some headphones and just work on a song is working well for me. This downtempo trip hop track was really quick and easy to put together. A live looping experiment with the Roland SP-404 MkII, TR-6s, Guitar and pedalboard. Laughing At Oblivion 2025-09-28 | So I've got a gig in December and I'm trying figure out a set up I can install in some form of performance case using some of the gear I don't use as much.Full playlist of jams here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3gylPYA6LNh40xuqT7AtbqxHRRTTcBZwSo today I recorded three seperate live looping jams that use just the Roland SP404 MKII and the TR-6s for my drums, bass, pads needs and then the guitar pedalboard as usual for my melody and lead.It kind of works but I'm still learning the looper on the SP404 MKII and I wish there was a way to record just the internal sounds whilst the external sounds passed through un-touched.For the final set up I think I would divide it up so that I had something like a Roland S1 for synth/bass sounds, the TR-6s for drums and then just have looped pads on the SP404 MKII and one shot samples. All of this with guitar (if necessary) going into a seperate mixer. Acid rave influenced trip hop anyone? Maybe. As we all know I am terrible with genres. I'm pushed for time at the moment so the video isn't the most exciting one that I've made. At the end the 'solo' was created by assigning knob 1 on the Squarp Pyramid to the filter on channel 1 of the Roland MC-101 and knob 2 to turn the midi-delay in the Pyramid on and off. Very fun!Gear used:Polyend Tracker Mini - Hi hats, bass, 'rave' piano pad thingy, middle section 'noise' and the middle section sample. Brainwashed - A dawless jam with the Polyend Tracker Mini, Roland SP-404, MC-101 and Squarp Pyramid Laughing At Oblivion 2025-09-07 | Another jam where I created the bones of it on the tracker mini whilst on holiday. Good enough for a ban from @HardwareJams ?So the basis of this is the Polyend Tracker mini. However the Squarp Pyramid is controlling the clock and transport (bigger buttons) and then sequencing some extra synth elements on the MC-101 (not in shot).Finally I added some samples using the Roland SP-404. The essential outcome was that capitalism peaks around the year 2040 followed by collapse of our society and reducing standards of living. Hmm.In 2021 someone who worked at KMPG said "hey, we now have lots of data for the last 50 years. I wonder how the data matches up to the simulation?" The outcome was that the data matched the simulation very well, peak around 2040 and then collapse. Ok.Someone else looked at this and said "Hey but we know more stuff, maybe we can make the simulation better and recalibrate it." They did, and there was still a peak around 2040 and then collapse. Wild.I'm not saying we've only got 20 good years left but essentially if we don't change the course of the boat pretty much today then we need to start preparing for stormy waters.It's a song. The Behringer Neutron fleshed out a sub bass in the Tracker Mini nicely. The Novation Drumstation v1 added some beef to the Tracker Mini drums and the Roland MC-101 is just great for pads/leads as a sound module (I can't actually remember which it was providing in this...sorry).The video I took when myself and some friends from the local pub went for a hike in the Black mountains in Wales. It was a great day out in beautiful scenery. It wasn't necessarily deliberate but there's also a nod to the video for Brown Paper Bag by Roni Size (which is great).So yeah IDM maybe, could be chill drum and bass at a push, maybe some weird hybrid of the two. A live looping hardware jam from scratch using the Pyramid, Drumstation, MC-101, Neutron and RC-500 Laughing At Oblivion 2025-08-10 | So the @HardwareJams challenge this week was to do a jam from scratch. It feels like it's been a while since I've done something like this but I really enjoyed it.Full playlist of jams here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3gylPYA6LNjHro2KGBKOBpAPeZu-qo0lSo I started with a chord on the guitar (Ibanez RC320M) looped with reverb on the Chase Bliss Mood MKII, there's a little bit of drive from the T Rex Mudhoney II as well.Then it's time to add some low bass from the Behringer Neutron and a slighly higher pitched bass line using the Roland MC-101. Then add drums from the Novation Drumstation Rack v1. All that is sequenced via the Squarp Pyramid.Next I looped some elements with the Boss RC-500 looper and then turned on the Lovepedal Stir of Echoes delay and drifted off into some psychedelic downtempo trip hop noodling. I could do this all day but a) it supposed to be under 5 minutes (fail) and b) I'm not sure you would want to listen to me do this all day. Everything was created or sampled into the Polyend Tracker Mini (including the solo!) except for one last vocal take recorded live at the end. I also managed to nail the vocals in one take, which I didn't expect.Yes it's political, it's punk.There are some definite nods to bands that I grew up listening to like Pop Will Eat Itself and maybe Senser. I loved the fact that in the 90's it was totally normal to mix abrasive guitars with electronic drums.Distortion is the T-Rex Mudhoney II. Yes, it's that versatile a pedal and there's some flanger and phaser in places from the Wampler Terraform.I'm not sure what else to say, except we need to increase the pressure on governments to challenge the state of Israel and hold it accountable. There is aid sat at the border of Gaza. It is not the UN's fault that it isn't being distributed which is the new lie being pushed. Creating a hypnotic Shoegaze Trip Hop song with the Polyend Tracker Mini. Laughing At Oblivion 2025-07-20 | ...a song. I have no idea where this sits genre wise but it was fun to make. Not the most live of jams but everything bar the final guitar performance was done with the Polyend Tracker Mini.Full playlist of jams here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3gylPYA6LNjHro2KGBKOBpAPeZu-qo0lI feel a a little like this jam fought me all of the way, however the workflow was more enjoyable and quicker than usign the Roland SP404 mkII. So a win for the tracker there.Basically, after sequencing some drums I recorded a guitar part into the Boss RC-500 looper and then used the live record on the tracker to lay down the bass synth. After that I sampled the guitar part in the looper and added that as a sample in the sequencer. Then rinse and repeat to add some lead elements and melody.I probably should have dropped the Wampler Terraform Tremolo from the 'lead' guitar sections as it all sounds a bit watery. Maybe that sounds interesting and good, maybe it sounds off. I can't decide, what do you think?Overdrive on most of the guitar parts from the T Rex Mudhoney II, reverb from the left side of the Chase Bliss Mood Mk II. fuzz is the Bleak District Electric Antistatic.After bringing all the elements together in a 'song' I did a final live recording adding some more lead parts over the top with the Lovepedal Stir of Echoes delay....and there we have the final thing. I have no idea what genre it is, algorithm do your worst. There are guitar elements that to me sound like Earth or maybe some Dead Meadow bordering on pyschedelic rock. There are some post rock bits, some nods to shoegaze and a definite hip hop beat which pushes it in the direction of trip hop.Anyhow I hope you enjoy it. With apologies to the @HardwareJams streamthrough hosts, particularly @hardwaresound Full playlist of jams at: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3gylPYA6LNjHro2KGBKOBpAPeZu-qo0lSo having picked up the Tracker Mini this is the first thing I came up with. It didn't take long a few 1-2 hour sessions over a 24 hour period. You'll notice it's at the 'stock' tempo. ;-)So far I think the tracker is great and more immediate than I was expecting. It's also pretty versatile in what you can create with it although obviously lends itself slightly to this kind of IDM.The sampling elements of it are actually really easy to use, 3.5mm stereo cable from my laptop to the line in and just record and crop stuff from Youtube, job done. Apologies to the victims.Why is it called Loose Adjustments? I feel like I understand it's functions and workflow, I feel like I have learnt the button combinations and yet I find it immensely frustrating.It does sometimes push me in directions that I wouldn't normally go. Today I decide to just muck about with my voice and guitar and see what happened. So this is the result. Genre? No clue maybe lofi hip hop, maybe lofi pop music I guess. Kind of a Beck vibe perhaps?I've found that I can spend hours creating on the SP404 with nothing to show for it or nothing that I like. Yes the process can be enjoyable but sometimes you do want results.My main gripes are that it's really hard to mix on it so that you can easily get the levels and panning of your sounds right. Plus there isn't really an EQ that you can apply and adjust on the fly. Aware there is an EQ and the Isolator in the FX but then you have to bake it into the sample with no ability to undo or tweak it. Frustrating.Anyhow enjoy. Or don't. The thing that jumped out at me was the Furby based pink monster created by the artist Slow Shrug (@Slowshrug on Instagram). I thought it was a cool little character. I don't know completely how that translated into this jam but I wanted to make something upbeat to reflect the bright colours but with a little bit of menace in there as it's also an unsettling monster design. Also the whole of that design is pretty trippy so we had to keep it weird.So this dawless hardware jam is IDM (I think) although it maybe borders on techno (I think) in places but still has a trippy ambient element to it. I leaned heavily into using the arpeggiator on the Squarp Pyramid to create some interesting effects layering arps on the same patch on the Roland MC-101.The Roland MX-1 as usual was my mixer but also enabled me to add in some glitchy roll effects for transistions and to add flavour to the beats and groove.Hope you like it, let me know in the comments. Stereo - IDM Hardware Jam using the Squarp Pryramid, Roland MC-101 and Novation Drumstation rack Laughing At Oblivion 2025-06-30 | This weekends @HardwareJams challenge was to make use of the stereo space. I hooked it up to the Roland MC-101 and the Novation Drumstation Rack and set to work. I went for 808 sounds on the Drumstation this time which is a departure from the norm for me but I think it works pretty well.Essentially I used LFO's on the Pyramid to control CC's on the MC-101 and Drumstation to do some panning effects and also alter one of the sound parameters on the pad to change it's position in space. I also tried to use the haas effect on the distorted sound but I made a mistake so it didn't quite go as plan.Also things not going to plan, I didn't have much time for this jam so I just used my phone camera recorded in OBS via camo studio. Mainly because I'd slightly lost track of what tempo my loops were and all my loops weren't the same length so it wasn't possible to seamlessly sequence them externally.So I just had to do it all on the SP404 which was fine. However I then added some Roland MX-1 filter effect at times to give it some more flavour. I don't know if it all works, let me know yay or nay in the comments.This song is about staying weird and keeping your mind open to stuff but at the same time not misrepresenting yourself in your online persona. Q: can I chop it up in the SP404 to create my usual style of trip hop? I'm starting to get my head around it as a beatmaking tool. There is a definite power in using the resample work flow to combine effects (like Scatter) live with programmed substeps in the TR-Rec sequencer. You can get pretty wild.I added in a kick from the Novation Drumstation Rack just to fill that out as the one on the Winston's record isn't that great.Once I had the Amen break chopped up into a lovely downtempo trip hop beat I got to work with the Squarp Pyramid to create and sequence all the elements together. Using the Roland MC-101 as my synth sound source I layered some low elements together and then added some melody on top. I've figured out the midi arpeggiator on the Pyramid and frankly it's great!Naturally I couldn't stop there so there is another easter egg sample in there for the punks! The idea was to create something trippy but as usual I've think I've ended up with a laid-back IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) vibe but as usual I'm not sure so let me know in the comments. The theme was 303 Day, but instead of creating an acid house track, I’ve chosen to create something more downtempo, perfect for the come down after the party?For this jam, I used the Korg SQ64 sequencer to drive the rhythm and melodies, while the Novation Drumstation Rack adds some punchy drum sounds and percussion. The atmospheric bass textures come from the Waldorf Streichfett, while the Roland MC-101 serves as the heart of the song, and the M-Audio Oxygen 8 MIDI keyboard lets me tweak and play some melodies along the way.This was created with hardware, but I did add some delay to the drums and a couple of samples in my DAW so is it a hybrid jam? Jam | Korg S64, Novation Drum Station, Roland MC-101 | Hardware Jams Weekend ChallengeFull playlist of jams: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3gylPYA6LNjk9eIiuMeMfAPIpCD3DDRXIn this DAWless jam, I explore new to me gear that I pickup using the Korg S64 sequencer, Novation Drum Station, with my Roland MC-101. This experimental track is part of the Hardware Jams Weekend Challenge, inspired by the hauntingly surreal art of Hieronymus Bosch.Watch as I combine some bleeps, some bloops and TR-909 style drums. The Korg S64 brings the beats to life, triggering rhythms on the Novation Drum Station while the Roland MC-101 adds some off kilter melodies and basslines.I think this has an acid house vibe slowed down and mangled through a trip hop filter. However I'm so far out of my normal musical comfort zone and niche I have no idea anymore. Let me know where you think this sits in the genre spectrum below. It's not the most live or improvised jam I've done but simply an exercise in learning the functions of the Korg S64 and experimenting with some sounds on the Novation Drum Station.After recording, the jam was mixed through my Samson PL1602 rack mixer with reverb added from the Alesis Microverb II. I didn't really use any compression mixing this except for on the kick using the Drawmer MX30. In this video, I'm diving into a dawless jam using my Roland MC-101 and custom pedalboard setup. No guitar used this time! This jam features a unique combination of effects pedals including: Wampler Terraform (Chorus and Univibe) Bleak District Electric Antistatic (Fuzz and noise) Chase Bliss Audio Mood MkII (Micro Loops and Reverb) Lovepedal Stir of Echoes (Delay) Boss RC-500 Looper (Looper)The theme for this challenge was to create a jam in any style or genre of your choice, keeping it within 3.5 minutes (a bit shorter than usual!). However on this week’s streamthrough there will be random speed manipulation—either sped up or slowed down—adding a layer of unpredictability to how it’ll sound during the streamthrough on Monday! Find the streamthrough on the Hardwared Jams channel @HardwareJams it usually starts at 8pm.I'm not sure which genre this jam lands in, it span off somewhere odd and weird and ended up with the Bleak District Antistatic becoming an instrument in it's own right. I'm very curious to see how it holds up at a different speed.
