A909 - DMAT - HWJ Weekend Challenge - Elektron Digitakt/Syntakt

DMAT 2023-09-10 | This weeks challenge was set by Jonathan R Cross. In honour of the date this weekend, the 9th of the 9th, we had to make a jam using 909 drums. I loaded some 909 samples into the Digitakt and used them for the beats. The musical bits are all sequenced on the Syntakt. I filmed my jam but the camera was out of focus. I was happy with the audio on the first take so ditched the video, kept the audio and used some footage I filmed on my phone on a road trip back from a gig in Norfolk instead. I don't know what the real name of the road was that we were on, so I called it the A909.

Hammerhead - DMAT - HWJ Weekend Challenge - Digitakt/Syntakt

DMAT 2023-05-22 | Here is my contribution to this week's challenge set by Andy and Grace.
"The mighty KLF once claimed “It’s grim up north” - but we beg to differ! Our beloved city of Sheffield has a long history of steel-making. One of the machines used in this process was known as the “drop hammer” - an enormous multi-ton hammer that stamped out the steel when it was still soft. The booms of the hammers dropping, that ran 24/7, would echo through the valleys and could be heard many miles away. This sound was hugely influential on the electronic music that has emerged from here, dating back over 50 years.

Legendary electronic music from our city that you may have heard of includes Cabaret Voltaire, Heaven 17, The Human League, Clock DVA, WARP Records, I Monster and Sweet Exorcist. Clearly many genres, not just “industrial techno”!

We challenge you to imagine that you can hear the drop hammers in the middle of the night, permeating your consciousness as you make your music, whatever it may be, and make us a jam that reflects this."

DMAT 2023-04-10 | Here is my entry for the HWJ/Petite Victory Collective remix challenge. It's a track by the artist 'Rome In Reverse' called 'Here It's All Over'. We were given access to the stems and tasked with making a remix or jam inspired by the song. I used the vocals, guitar, bell and one drum sample and then built an electro jam around those. BPM 115 (original BPM 130)

Fuzzy Bear Hug - DMAT - Elektron Digitakt/Syntakt

DMAT 2023-01-08 | Here is my contribution to this week's Hardware Jams weekend challenge set by Jonathan Cross. We had to create cosy jams to counteract the cold and darkness of this time of year in the northern hemisphere.
A little while back, my buddy UJTB sent me some mad sounds he'd made on the Syntakt. I used a couple of these as a starting point for this jam - a deep gnarly tuned kick and a wild effect he created on the dual VCO engine. I studied closely the settings he'd used to create these sounds and had a go at trying to recreate them myself. From there the rest of it just fell into place. Thanks UJTB!!

DMAT 2023-01-01 | Here is my Secret Santa for you Seb. I did a cover of one of your songs - 'The Banger'. I love this tune, it's so damn catchy. I did the keytar melody on electric guitar and programmed everything else on the Digitakt and Syntakt with additional arps on the Microfreak. I also added some Seb samples and a sample from your Miku drone piece (to use as a riser)

DMAT 2022-11-13 | Hi! Here is my contribution to the HWJ distortion challenge set by John Alchemy.

"This weekend lets go wild with Distorted sounds! Get your Fuzz, Overdrive, Distortion pedals out and put them on 11."

I used the built in overdrives in the Syntakt on the instruments and on the FX track. On the Digitakt I utilised the overdrive and also the bit crusher to push the distortion a little further.

Sometimes it’s about what isn’t there rather than what is. The gaps in sound are a tool that are often overlooked and difficult to control in electronic music. The lack of sound can be a powerful tool if used correctly. This week we’d like you to incorporate an element of silence in your jams. This could be a pause before a break, a moment of reflection in a bridge section, some time to allow the track to breathe between sections. Show us what can be done when you are thinking about what isn’t there rather than what is.

Forest Queen - Hardware Jams Weekend Challenge - Elektron Syntakt/Digitakt/Microfreak

DMAT 2022-06-05 | This week's challenge was part 2 of the HWJ story challenge. This part of the story was written by Sebtic Smile. Here is our prompt.

The story so far:
Your car is stuck in the woods with a flat tyre, you've gone to a pub for help. There are 3 guys there: an Enthusiastic guy; an Angry guy and a Sleepy guy.
You decide to get them all to come and help as not to offend any of them. You buy everyone a drink and then you all leave the pub. As you head out of the door, the bartender calls out with a worried look on his face, "Be careful, it's the Queen's Jubilee".
You shrug - how bad can it be - a few flags and bunting?
Eventually the four of you arrive back at the car. To your surprise it is covered with wildflowers and woven twig decorations. Weird. You hear a branch snap behind you - you turn to look at the others - Sleepy Guy has disappeared.
You double back to try to find him - maybe he lay down for a nap somewhere? Suddenly, you hear a terrifying scream. You spin round to see Enthusiastic Guy being dragged through the trees by something, screaming and thrashing as he disappears into the undergrowth.
You and Angry Guy exchange a horrified look. WTF is going on? Angry guy reaches into his jacket and pulls out a massive knife.
"Let's go," he mutters, striding in the direction that Enthusiastic was taken.
Heart pounding you hesitate for a moment, then follow him.
The woods are dark and quiet, all you hear are your footsteps crunching through the undergrowth.
You keep your eyes on Angry Guy, the last thing you want is to be alone in this forest.
As you struggle to keep up with Angry Guy, he suddenly plunges out of view, through the ground. You stop abruptly, at the edge of a massive hole. You can just make out Angry Guy at the bottom of the pit. He's not moving. The moon emerges from behind the clouds and to your horror, you see the Angry Man is impaled on a series of spikes that protrude from his stomach, his legs, his neck.
Instinct takes over and you run, trying to remember which direction the pub was. You see lights up ahead and head towards them as fast as you can.
You emerge from the woods - but it's not the pub. You enter a clearing, filled with hooded figures, holding flaming torches. You see Sleepy Guy and Enthusiastic Guy, stripped naked and tied to posts with binds of thorns. At their feet are bundles of twigs and kindling.
You are frozen with fear.
Two more hooded figures drag the body of Angry Man into the clearing and lash him to another post, stacking firewood at the base.
A tall figure, wearing a mask of a skull steps forward.
"Greetings." he speaks in a menacing voice.
"You have come to join us as we celebrate the Forest Queen's Eternal Jubilee. Play a song that will honour her or you will join your friends in a more dreadful sacrifice to her."
You realise, everything counts on this jam - as it may well be your last...
