Let's take a look through DC Comics' Elseworlds imprints, and see where and when the imprint has decided to place these legendary heroes! And if they work in their new environments.

Transcript:
After Batman and Houdini's failed attempt to catch the child abductor, the three attend the seance, Vale still insisting it was Batman who started the fire, where they find other well-to-dos in attendance. Including the Beef Baron Elijah Montenegro. The seance begins as Houdini skeptically watches on, only to behold the astral forms of both his mother and Bruce's appear and speak through Leonora. The experience is too much for the artist and he leaves, Bruce meeting up with him later as they discuss how what they witnessed was possible, bonding over the loss of their parents. Houdini reveals he knows Bruce is Batman, Bruce admitting after his parents deaths, he didn't know what to do. But while serving with Roosevelt's Rough Riders, he was shot off his horse and left for dead, the machinations of a nearby voodoo priest saving him, and from then on he devoted himself to fighting evil using the illusions and tools he was shown. Including the appearance of a bat. The two go off in search of Joker, tracking him to a carpenter's shop, where he's bound up two more children. He catches Batman off guard and tries to escape through hidden doors, but Batman blows the doors down and follows him into the basement, accidentally kicking him into a pit and seemingly killing him. They find the bodies of the missing children, completely drained of blood, and thinking they've solved the case, go home. But soon Houdini shows up at the Wayne manor, saying they missed something. He shows a film he made of the seance, where not only were they likely hypnotized to see the apparitions, but Montenegro doesn't show up at all, revealing he is literally a vampire. They decide to visit the baron's castle, using a plane Bruce bought in North Carolina, where it's shown the baron has kidnapped Vale and intends to make her his undead bride. The two barge in on Montenegro and Leonora about to turn Vale, but they prove too strong for the heroes and chain them up, before fleeing on a railway and burying them alive in an explosion. Houdini picks the padlock, while Batman uses an explosive to clear the rubble, and the two catch up with the train car. As Houdini takes on Leonora, Batman confronts the Baron, distracting him long enough for Vale to shove a wooden plank through his chest, destroying him. Batman and Vale escape the out of control car just in time, Houdini showing up on a handcart and saying Leonora melted when hit with his Star of David necklace. And thus the three venture back above ground, knowing nobody will believe their story, as a narrating Houdini finishes his memoirs. I dunno. I guess this is ok. It again feels like a story Batman was slapped onto just to sell copies, but at least he acts like Batman in this one, with a convincing origin for why. The comparisons Houdini makes between his and Bruce's different upbringings are interesting, showing how two different worlds can still work together. And they work quite well, with Houdini being an essential part of the story. However, I'm not a fan of this art style, where everything looks like muddy photographs and is really hard to make out. Heck, it's hard to tell the difference between Bruce and Houdini most times. And the tone as a whole just feels needlessly dark and cruel, which, I know is an accurate depiction of the time and place, but I just don't like reading these kinds of stories. If you do, maybe you'll enjoy this one, but I don't think I'll read it again. And I don't know what dressing as a bat has to do with being a Backstreet Boy.
