Let's take a look through DC Comics' Elseworlds imprints, and see where and when the imprint has decided to place these legendary heroes! And if they work in their new environments.

Later, a mysterious figure barges into Bruce's office at the Gazette, revealing himself to be Luthor, who then tears off his prosthetic skin to reveal he bears the facial features of the Joker thanks to a chemical accident a year ago. He shoots Bruce out the window with his umbrella gun, then abducts Lois and flies away using a helicopter backpack. He elaborates on his life since the accident, first spiraling into depression, before choosing to embrace chaos, with Gotham as his kingdom and Lois as his queen. Batman arrives and flies off with Luthor, who reveals he's used his fortune to recruit armed mercenaries that are currently tearing up Gotham's streets to remake it into the nation of Jokerania. An enraged Batman drops Luthor intending to kill him, but has a last minute change of heart and catches him, dropping him off at jail, before tackling the streets and ending the conflicts with as little injury as possible, much to Lois' surprise. Afterwards, he meets back up with Lois, who tells him he's changed for the better and that he can become a symbol of hope instead, also revealing she knew he was Bruce all along. Thus Batman is retired and Bruce becomes the Superman he was always meant to be! Yeah, this one doesn't work for me. I know Kal-El having to realize he's become something he's not is the main theme, but him taking on the Batman motif in the first place makes no sense. The actual Bruce is a mortal man who uses his intellect and elaborate getup to hide his vulnerabilities. Superman has no such weaknesses, so even if his life went the way it's presented here, there's no reason he'd also choose to be a warrior of the night. He'd just be an angrier Superman. Weirdly, Luthor as Joker makes more sense. A two-faced extremist who ruthlessly acquires just to tear everything down is an intriguing amalgamation. But the story itself just feels rushed and poorly paced, like it was originally longer, but had to be cut down to only its base plot points, not allowing anything to sink in or develop. It's not terrible, it just feels half-baked. A good idea on paper, but in execution, needed a little more thought to make it work. Still better than the last time Batman was Superman, though.
