Discovering that Superman is Mother's greatest enemy, Kamandi is ordered by Mother to complete their mission and kill him. But Kamandi hesitates, giving Superman the opening to fight back. Zom shoots him, showing he's no longer invulnerable to bullets, and seemingly kills him. The gang take in what just happened, only for the biomechs to finally catch up and abduct them, also taking Superman's body aboard their ship. They travel to their home base of Sky City, where they imprison and prepare to interrogate Kamandi and friends. While Superman has recovered and is beginning to regain his powers and memories thanks to the pure sunlight the biomechs provide him. They tell him they've deduced that the system known as Mother was built after the first apocalypse and is directly responsible for the second, Superman confirming, saying he was overruled protesting its construction, and as it grew, it became paranoid of humanity and unleashed the virus that killed or mutated most of the population. Kamandi still insists Mother is good and Superman is the one who destroyed everything, but is held back as the biomechs use the book taken from the library to target Mother's brain core. As Boxer and Superman discuss how taking out Mother will mean civilization can finally reemerge, the floating city is attacked by Mother's defenses, Kamandi and crew using the distraction to escape. Unfortunately, Zom is hit by debris that severs his legs and Kamandi and Saphira have to abandon him. Superman tries to stop them from escaping, but they're all blown out of the sky by Mother, Superman regaining his power of flight just in time to save them. They land and Superman begins digging toward Mother's core, Kamandi protesting and still insistent that Mother is good. Which gives Mother enough time to find the group, telling Kamandi his mission is complete and he can return to the bunker. She forbids him to bring Saphira, but Kamandi is unwilling to abandon his new love and they both retreat into the bunker despite Mother's protests. The biomechs find Superman unconscious and revive him, before they also go into the bunker. Kamandi and Saphira retreat further underground, fighting off the mutated animal life, until they reach Mother's control room. Mother feigns acceptance for Kamandi's choice, luring him into the virtual reality chair, where she begins to electrocute him, while Saphira is attacked by a mutant. Kamandi manages to rip himself away and shoot the creature, demanding to know the truth about what Mother did as she rants about how he's failed her. She captures them again, as Superman leads the biomechs through the bunker, taking out Mother's defenses and reaching the control room, where he frees the two. Kamandi places himself back in the chair and begins to access Mother's operating code, where Mother tries to distract him by putting him back in his virtual reality fantasy. But Kamandi is no longer fooled and disables the simulation, eventually reaching her base files and beginning to shut her down. As Superman and the biomechs protect his physical form, Kamandi eventually comes face to face with a virtual version of his actual mother, whose brain serves as the core of the entire mainframe. She thanks him for freeing her, and finally the entire operating system is destroyed for good. The humans move to Arizona, including Zom who was saved and given robotic legs, while Superman goes with the biomechs to rebuild the Earth. And the story ends with Zom going to explore the continent, while Kamandi and Saphira are officially a couple and humanity is in their hands. I know this story wasn't critically well received, but I had fun with it. Yes, it's stupid 90s cheese, but it's aware of that fact, and doesn't try to be anything but. I liked seeing the ridiculous exaggerated post-apocalyptic machinery and mutants, and the overly muscled artwork and fight scenes of the comic's time period. There's not much here story or even character-wise, but for the action schlock it is, it's pretty enjoyable. Though if Mother's been a computer for decades, how does she have a teenage son?
