Superman Speeding Bullets is technically the first published Superman Elseworlds story, despite still being Batman themed. In this reality, Kal-El's escape pod instead crashes on the outskirts of Gotham City, where he's found by a passing Thomas and Martha Wayne and raised as their son Bruce. His parents educate him mentally and emotionally, and he grows into a smart, kindhearted young man, though he's kept away from society due to his inhuman strength and invulnerability. One night, the family walk home after a screening of Zorro, when they're held up by Joe Chill, and in the scuffle, Bruce's parents are gunned down. Joe then tries to finish off Bruce, but the bullets have no effect, and a furious Bruce unleashes his heat vision on the shooter, burning him alive. Afterwards, Bruce barricades himself in the manor for twelve years, unable to shake off the horrors of that night. Alfred encourages him to get out again, but Bruce can't bear to be in a world of violence and suffering, obsessing over news stories about people senselessly slaughtered, until he finally has a mental breakdown. Just then, burglars break into his house, demanding he cooperate, but Bruce isn't in the mindset to do so, easily dispatching them, and barely restraining himself from also using his heat vision on them. A horrified Bruce runs off to a hidden room in the mansion, realizing he could have saved his parents if he had used his abilities, and wondering what he even is. Where Alfred reveals he's in the cave where his escape pod and his father's notes on the event are kept. And as he gazes upon the bats flying above, he finally realizes his destiny. After it's shown the burglars were hired by a Joker-like figure, who then disposes of them, we witness a sniper perched on one of Gotham's rooftops, who's suddenly ambushed by a strange bat figure, completely bulletproof and able to shrug off explosives. He drops the sniper off to the police below, nobody sure what just happened as the bat figure flies away. Later, Lex Luthor heads a meeting where he's about to take ownership of Wayne Enterprises, when the reclusive CEO arrives and cancels the deal, finally deciding to be active in his company's business, much to Luthor's anger. He also brings in Perry White and Lois Lane to work at his Gotham Gazette, quickly falling for the latter. But one night, Lois is abducted by Luthor, Batman noticing from a distance. Luthor admits that despite how she tarnished his reputation, he's always been attracted to her, but the feeling's not mutual, so he pushes her out of his car, swearing vengeance. During the long walk back to her apartment, she's accosted by a street gang, where Batman shows up to save her, but she's horrified by his brutality and how he seems to take pleasure in it. So after the fight, she rejects his help and he leaves seemingly hurt. Bruce later drops in on Lois finishing up her news article, Lois recounting her experience to him and how she's disgusted someone with that much power uses it to inflict pain instead of making the world better. But she thinks Bruce is an altruistic man and they quickly fall for each other.
