The Barry Allen Story. During a battle with Captain Cold, Barry is forced to bring both Wally and the villain to the Central City hospital for their severe injuries. When Wally regains consciousness, he's recognized by the nurse as the star of the TV show Fast Times With Wally West, which she's a huge fan of, Wally promising her a bit part for the next season. Barry suddenly runs back in and confronts Captain Cold, demanding to know how to disable his Ice Age machine, also checking in with Wally and telling him everything's all right, before abscounding with Captain Cold to hopefully save the day. And that was the last time anyone saw the hero alive. Ten years later, Wally serves as the director for a movie based on Barry Allen's life. Which proves more challenging than he expected as the lighting for a shot is ruined, messing up the entire day's work, and getting him chewed out by the producer, who regrets hiring the now washed-up actor to direct. Wally insists this is a very personal project for him, but he's fired and told he no longer has a future in this business. An Entertainment Tonight pastiche reports on the new movie and Wally's former life as a hero and TV star, saying he was on the way up a decade ago, but with the death of Barry Allen, he suddenly began to lose his superpowers, and soon even the ability to walk, his show being canceled and Wally relegated to the status of a has-been. His assistant Linda arrives at his apartment to find him stone drunk, and as she gets him in the shower to recover and clean up, she discusses with his doctor how low he's sunk, both of them thinking this movie is his final chance to reconnect with some semblance of Barry and hopefully his road to recovery. They manage to get him rehired as director, and he fixes the shots he messed up the previous day. But when the actor playing Barry has issues with how his next scene is written, Wally chews him out, saying the dialog is just as Barry would have said it, and if he has any pride in his role, he'll deliver it just as Barry would have. Unfortunately, even the crew secretly have to admit the dialog comes across as too corny, as the scene plays out a little differently than what actually happened, with Wally giving himself a much more active role in it. Which the reformed Captain Cold also confirms, who's become a celebrity thanks to his tell-all autobiography and has been brought on as an advisor to finish the movie. As they view newly released footage of Captain Cold escaping his Ice Age machine before it explodes, Wally holds the former villain responsible for murdering Barry, who retorts by revealing the previous scene of Wally and Barry was fake. Much to the producer's outrage, who demotes Wally and appoints Cold as director. Cold then goes on a talk show to promote his book, where he bemoans how he's a parapalegic thanks to Barry, and that Barry wasn't the angel the public saw him as, casting doubt on masked heroes in general, especially those who are interviewed and deny Cold's claims. Later, Cold reshoots the previous scene, portraying himself as more of the hero, but Wally gets one final chance to tell his story as he directs the shot of Barry loading Cold into the Ice Age machine's escape pod to show how much of a hero he was. He realizes what the hospital scene was missing and goes to beg the producer to let him direct it one last time. Where he only finds Cold at the trailer who refuses to let him call the producer to reshoot his scene, and a desperate Wally tackles the former villain, suddenly regaining use of his legs as the two brawl on the ground. Cold insists they're the same, which Wally denies, and even as Cold suggests they could go on tour together and ride the Flash fad for all it's worth, Wally pushes him away and reaches for the phone, Cold getting to it first, but being electrocuted by the wet device. Thus a reinvigorated Wally hobbles back to the hospital set and demands they do it one more time, insisting he's finally ready to tell the truth, and shooting the scene as it happened, the way it was meant to be seen. Filming concludes with one final explosion and the movie is a hit, giving Wally a future career as a director, and the confidence to walk again. Holy crap, this was fantastic! It's a very meta story, showing the lives of heroes and villains both on and off the screen, and the different struggles they must deal with in each. It reminds me of Birdman, in how the main character is struggling to tell a very personal story to break away from a past they're trying to escape, but has to deal with the studio system and familiar faces.
