It's the evening of December 1st, 2017 - I've already written one piece of music today, what do I do now?
The answer probably shouldn't have been "write another piece," but that's what I did - so here I present to you the recorded remake of "The Sea of Mystery" a MIDI written immediately after I finished my 11 hours of work on "The Joy of Winter." Like JoW, this was made for The Joy of Mapping 5 event that was going on in the Doom community at the time, and so this was made as a potential resource for anyone working on the underwater-themed third episode to use, but like with JoW, no one did.
In hindsight, I don't see this as a particularly strong composition, a shame as it's the last thing I wrote in 2017, a year that I still feel has most of my best work. Consequently I wasn't too excited about revisiting it now but I hoped that it would turn out a bit better than the MIDI version.
I think it has - the underwater theme of the piece comes across a lot more clearly than when confined to the MIDI sounds and the rather empty first half of the piece feels more justified. While a grand piano wouldn't really have worked in the MIDI version, I used one here in place of the electric pianos, which sounds a bit nicer, and I also had the option to filter the drums for the first half and soak them in reverb to make them sound more underwatery.
I felt it was a shame that JoW went completely unused in JoM5, but for this one I'm not really bothered. I feel like the remake has been pretty successful for what it is, and now we move on.
So after this it's time for 2018 work! Because I was very busy with this channel throughout, there's not much stuff from that year, just 8 pieces compared to 13 in 2017 or 16 in 2016. So we'll be seeing the time gap close very quickly from this point forward. The 15-part Panophobia suite thing is technically a 2017-2018 composition but as the WAD still isn't out and that piece is still subject to changes, we'll leave that for now. However, if my memory serves me right, it was during JoM5 that dobu requested another level theme (i.e. like Indecision) for Panophobia from me, and that is how we will kick off 2018, so see you all next time for that! Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed this piece :)
