Darkest Hour is the intermission theme from Final Doom megawad TNT: Revilution, heard after completing every level. On the old channel, it had nearly 800 views, the highest of all my compositions uploaded there.
When I first joined the Revilution team, the first piece I wrote was 'Aftermath.' This was intended for MAP32, but me and Devalaous agreed it lacked the cold feeling we wanted, and since it was only 2 minutes long, it wound up in the intermission slot, with Frozen Wilderness becoming my second attempt at the 32 theme. I ended up hating Aftermath though, and at the end of 2014, I wrote Darkest Hour to replace it.
It's counterpart from the original TNT was 'Legion of the Lost,' one of the best known pieces in the original Doom soundtracks, perhaps also one of the most remixed. I myself had already had a go at that in 2013 (and it sucked), and I would later make a second - and imo better - remix in 2015 for THT: Threnody, but I didn't want to do this with Revilution. Instead, I took the musical concept of a 6/8 piece using just two chords (i-VI) and building it over time. I kinda did this before with Cry of Desperation.
The hardest thing this time around was - surprise, surprise - the guitar solo. Yes, just when I thought I was getting somewhat decent, I hit a roadblock, with parts of the solo needing to be rewritten to be even close to playable. I gave up trying to play it, resorting to sequenced guitars, only to find they also sounded awful in the most difficult parts. So I un-gave up, gave up again, and un-gave up a second time before realising my approach was probably wrong if the sequenced guitars weren't working either. At some point I also tried making it a keyboard solo, but quickly abandoned this because G# minor is a horrible, HORRIBLE scale for keyboards - not one I'm good with at all.
Overall it took me five evenings, and although I tend to exaggerate a lot, I am completely for real when I say that it probably took me 500-600 attempts - including maybe about 100 practices that I didn't record. Should stick to writing maybe :P
So, I hope you enjoy the song, and please spare a thought for this unskilled fool when you hear that guitar solo :) Now I get one piece away from playing instruments until The Last Sunset, which has even crazier stuff in it! Thanks for listening!
