Otherworld was one of the last tracks I started working on for the album because I was always a little apprenhensive about doing it. Once I decided on just using some of the sounds straight from the original MIDI, it came together very quickly.
The reason I chose to do it like this is because I think for tracks like this, the "rules" are different. Normally when doing these arrangements, it's quite straightforward, equivalent VSTs per instrument, recorded guitar and bass, and synths in the MIDIs are usually just the closest I can get to what I actually had in mind, so I can try and give a better representation in the arrangement.
Otherworld was inspired by PlayStation Doom's music, a soundtrack where I noticed many of the tracks each have a signature sample or two that form the overall basis of the respective track. With Otherworld, I did the same thing with general MIDI instruments. I took the accordion, played the lowest note available in GM, then spammed expression events to make the pulsing effect and copied this throughout the track and this became one of the signature samples - the same idea was used some of the other elements. And I think, if those exact sounds aren't there, it's not really Otherworld anymore, so the easier route was the better one to take here by just rendering individual stems from the MIDI and dropping them into this arrangement.
The Juno-6 VST from the title track that became central to this album steps in as the main tonal drone which allowed me to write a new ending for the track connecting it more directly to the finale. Overall I really like how this one turned out, I was happy with the results I managed to get in General MIDI alone, but having those limitations removed really benefitted this track so much.
This concludes the video series for "The Origin" album, and I guess that ends the main Eviternity saga from my side. End of an era! Thank you all so much.
