aka Greensleeves but it's power metal. This is the third of my five second year university assignments that I'll be posting here.
For this one, the task was to select an existing piece of folk, jazz or blues music and use it as the basis for an original composition - something I actually already did with 'Contemplation,' which incidentally was also based on Greensleeves. A few days after I finished Moonlight I had to leave to visit family over Christmas, and this assignment, which was due in early/mid-January, wasn't started when I returned just before the turn of the year. So unfortunately, I didn't have time to be imaginative here, so I decided to just do another reinterpretation of Greensleeves, but this time in a very different style.
Just over a week later I was done, it's quite a simple piece but I could justify that as calling back to the simple repetitive structures found in folk music - Greensleeves' own ABAB structure a prime example of this. I had to fill 2-3 minutes, so once I'd used up the actual Greensleeves melody, I threw in some solos, starting with a synth, followed by bass, and ending the track with what I think may be the best guitar solo I've ever played :) I'm still very proud of it!
That ending guitar solo was the only thing I filmed initially because I was short on time, but felt that I'd never be able to replicate it when it came to making the video. So here, everything apart from the keyboard solo and ending guitar solo is mimed (I actually cheated with the original keyboard solo and didn't want to release it because of that so I recorded a new one).
I was never sure what to name the piece, or even what to do with it. When I submitted the assignment it was just called "Not Greensleeves.mp3." I then offered to extend and rework it for Elementalism's Light boss, but it didn't really match what the team is planning for that. I was still going to extend it a bit, but ended up leaving the track as it is, I didn't have any ideas for new sections and liked the simple nature of it enough anyway. While working on this video, I realised that it's the 100th video to be posted on this channel, so I named it Centuries as a nod to both this and the concept of the piece; reinterpreting 16th century music in a modern style.
