Let's take a look through DC Comics' theoretical universe following the young adult adventures of Superman & Batman Junior!
Transcript:
Town of the Timeless Killers. The two friends pal around in an ATV, but when Bruce tries some stunt driving, he ends up smashing the vehicle. They escape unharmed, but Clark quickly finds he strangely no longer has his superpowers! The two walk into a nearby Western ghost town, finding it completely abandoned, and in the graveyard, they discover a multitude of gravestones, including quite a few freshly carved ones. They're suddenly ambushed by a man calling himself Kid Bowie, announcing he's going to kill them and proving that Clark is now vulnerable. Clark faints and Bruce runs away with him, only to then be cornered by a gunman named Jack Slade. He runs from him too, to find himself pursued by another outlaw named Lever Monroe. They hide in the water tower, and once he's bandaged up Clark, Bruce quietly escapes, attempting to flee the town borders and find help, only to find himself trapped by an invisible barrier. He returns to a now conscious Clark, revealing that he learned from town newspapers that the force field has surrounded the town for over a century, trapping all who wander in. Including the infamous murderers, who massacred the town, and now kill anyone else who wander in, seemingly made immortal by the field. The two realize they have no other recourse but to fight, but Clark refuses to take Bruce's suggestion that they need to kill the three. At that moment, they hear a cry for help and save a young woman named Susie Wells, who also wandered into the town, Bruce finally convincing Clark they need to fight to the death. The next morning, Bruce changes into his supergarb and faces Kid Bowie, protecting himself with a blasting vest he found that parries Bowie's knife and gives him an opening to throw Bowie into a post, knocking him out. Meanwhile, Clark takes on Jack Slade, tricking him into firing on a full length mirror and stunning him with wax bullets. The whole group then take on Lever Monroe, Bruce remembering he's a notorious gambler as well as sharpshooter, thus he challenges him to shoot all the cards out of his hand. He does, but that just gives Bruce the opening to assault Lever and his now empty rifle. They tie them up and feel that their mission is complete, only to discover Susie is yet another outlaw and the leader of the posse, threatening the heroes with her bullwhip. Clark seemingly flees from her, only to suddenly turn around and grab her whip, yanking her off the ground and knocking her out on a tree. He discovers that he recovers his powers by standing on one specific gravestone, Bruce explaining it's because the occupant had soil shipped in from his homeland, which must not contain the same power-draining properties as the rest of the town's dirt. He uses the spot as a springboard to catapult a wagon with Bruce and the outlaws out of the valley, before burying the town so nobody will fall victim to the field again. But as they deliver the criminals to the local sheriff, they find they've been reduced to bone, the magic of the valley the only thing that had been keeping them alive. This is pretty good. Again a story that could have been given to most superheroes, but it's exciting and inventive. A town stuck in time is always a fun concept, and I like how Clark and Bruce manage to outsmart the outlaws, with Susie's reveal not being too bad a twist. I don't know how the force field is suddenly down, or what created it in the first place, nor how it's the dirt sapping Clark's strength, but, hey, comic book logic of the time. This is pretty generic, but still fun to read. Also, I guess Clark used one of those specially made mirrors that only reflects whoever's standing right behind you.
