Robin 3000. Sometime in the next millennium, Earth has been conquered by an alien race known as the Skulp. And at the beginning of the year 3000, the current Batman and his Robin sidekick are being chased by Skulp fighter ships bearing down on them. Knowing escape is impossible, Batman, coincidentally also named Bruce, instructs Robin, filled by his nephew Tom, to eject and continue the resistance against the Skulp. Tom escapes moments before the Batship is obliterated, but before he can get away, he's caught by a Skulp drone, who sentences him to a prison ship for insubordination. A year later, a prison guard is about to punish Tom, only to be teleported by a reprogrammed robot guard, that Tom then sets to explode, taking his cell wall with it. Tom's friend Aki shows up and they escape in his space shuttle, fleeing the Skulp ships in hot pursuit. Where they also see the news reporting that Tom has agreed to work with the Skulp and denounce the actions of the Waynes, Tom whole-heartedly denying it. They make it to the planet Bolivar, home of Aki's resistance friends, but their ship runs out of fuel and they're forced to crash land, greatly injuring Tom. They're rescued by a human scientist named Dire, who works at a Skulp research center, and takes them in, Aki convincing him they're freelance surveyors. Most of Tom's injuries are easily treated, but his right hand is crushed and Dire is forced to amputate, replacing it with a cybernetic prosthetic. As Tom lies unconscious, he reflects on his family history, showing that he's the grandnephew of Bruce Wayne the 19th, who developed a new process for genetic manipulation, warning it only be used for plant acclamation. Of course, it was eventually expanded to human testing, resulting in a mutating virus that caused the human genome structure to collapse. Luckily, the Skulp happened by and managed to use their own medical knowledge to reverse the mutations, while the Wayne name was made mud. The Skulp proved indispensable for the humans and eventually absorbed Earth into their empire, imprisoning Bruce's son Bruce the 20th in fear he'll rediscover his father's genetic secrets. This Bruce was eventually freed with the promise he'll renounce his family's legacy, but he actually rediscovered the Batcave of his ancestors and reignited the legend of Batman, becoming the Skulp's greatest enemy. The operation is a success and Tom wakes up with a Swiss Army Hand. Unfortunately, as Tom tests it out, Aki lets his real name slip, alerting Dire who then alerts the Skulp authorities. The two take Dire hostage and steal a ship for the capital city Simon, Dire telling them he also has no love for the Skulp, and proving it by securing them safe passage into the city. They drop Dire off and head for Aki's contact, Tom proving a massive monster protecting the facility is just an illusion, and they head inside to meet Aki's friend Moon. Moon mentions he saw a picture of Tom's uncle in his manager's safe, which Tom uses his new cybernetic hand to open, wondering why the Skulp have a picture of the previous Batman in a secure place. He's ambushed by an alien creature, which he manages to subdue, Moon explaining it's a clone as the three slip out before the guards ask questions. Outside, they see Tom's doppelganger addressing the crowd about how great the Skulp are, Tom dismissing it as an android duplicate. Meanwhile, aboard the Skulp flagship Excalibur, Dregon, the head of Skulp counterintelligence, watches the Tom androids denouncing their lineage, hoping the real Tom will be forced out of hiding. He meets with his human agent Genra, before they take off to continue their propaganda on Cetigus Beta. The Tom android's speech is cut short by a sudden rebel uprising, who open fire and take who they think is the real Tom hostage. But the group is captured and taken to Dregon, both groups gloating at each other before Dregon exiles them to the planet's distant past. Meanwhile, an android duplicate of Tom created by Batman suddenly reactivates and escapes Skulp captivity, causing security to be tightened on all human planets. And Tom, knowing he has to lie low for a while, escapes in a barely working car. His adventures continuing next issue.
