Batman & Houdini The Devil's Workshop. In early 20th century Gotham, a rash of child kidnappings take place in a corner of the city known as the Devil's Workshop, perpetrated by this universe's Joker. A bat-like figure leaps from a tall building, only to reveal it's actually the escape artist Houdini testing out a new act. Who hears about the abductions from Vicki Vale and wonders if he can help the authorities. Meanwhile, train-magnate Bruce Wayne and his butler Alfred return from a vacation. As their train pulls into the station, the cart driven by the Joker is upset by the tracks, Joker grabbing one of the captured girls and running off before the train smashes the wagon, the other kids rescued just in time by nearby workers. Spotting the Joker, Bruce quickly changes into Batman and pursues him into a subway tunnel, finding both the girl and Joker, who insinuates he's been eating the children, before his attack dogs distract Batman long enough to get away. Batman uses sneezing powder to distract the dogs, while the police follow them in to find Batman long gone, but the girl alive and intact. Bruce reads the paper the next day to find it blames Batman for the abductions, as he vows to track down the real perpetrator. He arrives at the Arcadia Club, where he meets up with not only newspaper reporter and Wayne opposer Vicki Vale, but Houdini performing his feats for the club members. They discuss who's actually behind the kidnappings, Bruce denying it's the bat creature Vale reported, which Houdini agrees, but declares he's going to trap it just in case. They see Vale off, Bruce promising to go to a show with her later that week, and the two men joke about modern women. Later, Joker explains to his off-screen employer what happened to the latest batch of children, who's revealed to be the Beef Baron that had visited the Arcadia earlier, and that Joker goes by the name Mr Schadenfreude, who he instructs to burn his meat processing plant. Later, Batman takes to the streets for information, being told Joker works for the meat packing plant and that he's very dangerous. Bruce attends the show with Vale, and afterwards, since he owns the theater, brings her backstage to meet the performer Leonora. Where they find the Baron is also her manager, and they're invited to Leonora's seance, which Houdini will also be attending. That night, Batman investigates the meat plant, which Houdini also just so happens to be snooping around. He sees Batman, and, as the hero fumbles with the skylight, sneaks up and tries to threaten him with a gun. Batman throws sneezing powder in his face, and as the two scuffle, Joker plants explosives in the factory, which go off as soon as the heroes cease. Batman tries to go after the Joker, but is distracted by the trapped workers throwing themselves out the window to their deaths, Batman barely managing to save a few of them. Batman investigates the street below, Houdini joining him despite his insistence he doesn't need his help, and Houdini quickly deduces Bruce and Batman are the same person. The fallout detailed in the next part.
