Let's take a look through DC Comics' Elseworlds imprints, and see where and when the imprint has decided to place these legendary heroes! And if they work in their new environments.

As part of an event, and probably to promote the new imprint, all DC Comics Annuals in 1994 were Elseworlds-themed. In Legacy, Krypton explodes centuries earlier than usual, the sole survivor the grown Gar-El, who speeds in his escape pod towards Earth, smashing into colonial America around the mid-18th century. He emerges and quickly demonstrates his new superpowers, declaring himself the Warlock Royal, and establishing himself as a ruling presence in England while quelling all insurrection. Including seeing that all the Founding Fathers are hung before they can start the American Revolution. Thus 200 years later, the British Empire rules the world, with Gar-El and his descendants sovereign over all of it. Kal-El, the great great grandson of Gar-El, is invited to raid the offices of the Daily Planet newspaper for their acts of sedition, despite Kal showing a kinder soul than his contemporaries. They're assaulted by Perry White and Lois Lane, Kal managing to talk them down from pursuing action against Lois, but Perry is made an example of in the town square. Kal goes to visit his grandfather Gar, asking why he allows these things to happen, where he responds it's all in the name of keeping peace and order. Cautiously reminding Kal that his human lineage means he barely has any Kryptonian blood or ability, and he would hate for the same thing to befall him as did his father. A year later, Kal enters a tavern looking for information on someone named L. He's brushed off, but as he leaves is assaulted by a mysterious hooded group. He's taken to a dark room, where he sees Lois among their number, who asks why Kal wants to see L and why they should trust him. Kal responds that he doesn't agree with the totalitarian rule of his grandfather and seeks a world of liberty, which his father Jor-El also spoke of to gain the respect of the common person. They induct him into their ranks, and he uses his status to lead them to his palace's dungeons, where they've heard there's something hidden with the power to kill Kryptonians. Kal proves his dedication by shooting the locked chest and taking out the item, shown to be Kryptonite, that doesn't affect him due to his diluted heritage. They take it back to base, where they finally trust him to meet L. Who, of course, is Lois. Later, Kal confronts his grandfather, demanding he let the people govern themselves. He lectures that Gar could have used his abilities to create a paradise but instead chose to oppress the people and prevent them from progressing, all so he could live a sheltered pampered life like those on Krypton were so used to. Gar begins to retort, only for Kal to be shot and killed by the guards outside the door. Who find that Kal had brought the Kryptonite with him, but decided to reason with Gar first. Gar secretly admits that everything Kal said was true, tossing Kal's body into the sun, before heading into space to seek for truth, as the Earth celebrates his departure. This is alright. Pretty typical revolt and revolution story, but I do like the anachronistic setting. Where Gar clearly limits the technology, and possibly population, level to one that doesn't threaten him. And the ending where Kal convinces Gar of the error of his ways rather than physically confronting him was nice and unexpected. There's also the comedy story follow-up Doomsday in the Fifth Dimension, where Kal-El's escape pod accidentally ends up in the Fifth Dimension and a grown Superman emerges from it, unintentionally terrorizing the magical imp population. After much destruction and misunderstanding, King Mxyzptlk knocks the intruder out and stuffs him back inside the pod, before shooting it to Earth to let them deal with him. Yeah, this issue is a good read. Though is Kal the great great grandson of Gar, or his tenth great grandson? Because they say he's both.
