Let's take a look through DC Comics' Elseworlds imprints, and see where and when the imprint has decided to place these legendary heroes! And if they work in their new environments.
Transcript:
By morning, the trap is set and the team attempt to attract Batman to the caves. However, Batman shows he's been there all this time and ambushes the team, completely unable to control himself. He attacks Killer Croc, whose hide seems too tough to penetrate, which allows Gordon to get a shot in, impaling Batman through the heart and again paralyzing him as he falls deeper into the Batcave. But with Batman gone, the villains turn on Alfred and Gordon, shooting the latter as Killer Croc prepares to eat Alfred, who makes a hasty retreat. An injured Gordon manages to shoot and kill Two Face's gang members from behind the giant penny, but uses all his ammunition in the process, allowing Two Face to ambush him. Meanwhile, Alfred avoids Killer Croc and is suddenly seized by Batman, who's not entirely paralyzed but is left weakened by the blow. Alfred insists he save Gordon, sacrificing himself by letting Batman feed on him, and Batman uses his newfound strength to impale Killer Croc with a stalactite. He then saves Gordon by stabbing Two Face with the crossbow bolts, but reveals he's quickly losing control, demanding Gordon kill him before he indoctrinates him to his undead army. Obviously Gordon picks the former and presses the detonator, collapsing the ceiling to let the sun in, but being crushed in the process. Thus the monstrous Batman is well and truly defeated as sunlight disintegrates him, certain his soul is damned for his actions, but finding peace in the safety he's brought Gotham. This was better than I thought it would be! I wasn't impressed with the start, which feels like grimdark violence for the sake of violence, just made as an excuse to kill more Batman villains, with much more cartoonish and even goofy artwork than the previous stories. But it gets better in the second half, where we see how tortured Batman truly is as he recognizes he's lived long enough to become the villain and what that means if he can't find the willpower to end it all. With his monologues being the best in the series, and Batman's desiccated vampiric form memorably terrifying. Plus his friends loyalty is commendable, trusting that, despite what Batman has become, they still believe he can do what must be done, sacrificing themselves so Gotham can finally know peace. Good wrap-up for a trilogy of Batman's more unique tales. Though Riddler's riddle makes no sense any way you look at it.
