Recently we started the year with the remaster of Syberia that was made by the talented studio Microids. Way back in the day they also made a short series known as Still Life. These unfortunately have never been remastered, but I was able to get it working and archive it so that it will not be lost in time.
Still Life is a really interesting adventure game where you play as two different characters in seperate time lines. You start out as Victoria who is investigating a crime scene in 2005 and her chapters feel straight out of movies like Seven and The Bone Collector. Seven is actually my number 1 favorite movie of all time, so I was very excited to witness a game where the atmosphere kinda felt like that.
And on the other hand you play as Gus who investigates a series of crimes commited in Prague during the late 20's. The story and writing is great and I was invested from the very first moment. The pacing is slow, but it gives itself time to breath as you explore many different areas, talk to various people and solve multiple puzzles. The later half of the game is unfortunately a bit rushed and I was hoping for more closure with the ending. Some of the puzzles are great, but others are also annoying like the notorious cookie puzzle or, in my case, the lockpicking puzzle which drove me crazy. Overall a fine game that really shines with its story and atmosphere and is the perfect candidate for a modern remaster where they streamline some of the puzzles and pacing.
