While visiting Sulawesi's paddy fields on a rainy afternoon, I was delighted to spot this elegant and dainty- looking shorebird. This Pied Stilt was a breeding adult, sporting a clean white head. The long black 'mane' at the back of its neck distinguishes it from its close cousin, the Black-winged Stilt.
It was out foraging, seemingly undeterred by the downpour which was heavy at times.
It was a joy to be able to observe it calmly going about its business of feeding.
Besides paddy fields, the Pied Stilt favours marshes, flooded grassland and the fringes of lakes and ponds.
The Pied Stilt aka White-headed Stilt, is a resident of Sulawesi. This species has a wide distribution worldwide.
