For me, it's always a lot of fun to observe bird nestings and this one really made me smile!
There were three chicks at this Asian Pied Starling Nesting. They were close to fledging age. Restless and super anxious to be fed, they called raucously whenever their parents returned with feeds. They were so edgy, so much so that when one started calling, oftentimes at false alarms, the other two followed blindly. It was hilarious to watch.
As the warm afternoon wore on, the chicks began to show signs of exhaustion, perhaps because of the trying heat, and likely also because they had been so highly charged. They started to struggle to stay awake, but try as they might, they couldn't help nodding off even as they continued to await feeding. It was funny to watch them waking up with a jolt, and then promptly falling asleep again.
These chicks fledged a day after this video was filmed.
Aka Pied Myna, Asian Pied Starlings are common residents of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
They are not found in the wild in Singapore though. Once in a while, there were sightings of an individual or two, but those were likely escapees from the pet trade.
At Mandai Bird Paradise, this species is housed at the Wings of Asia aviary.
