The gender of Pied Kingfishers can be told apart quite easily - unlike the complete double breast bands of her male counterpart, the female Pied Kingfisher has a single broken breast band.
Dressed in black and white, with a prominent black crest, she is an elegant beauty.
Pied Kingfishers are water kingfishers, feeding primarily on fish, but also taking in crustaceans and invertebrates such as insect larvae.
Pied Kingfishers have a wide range of distribution, ranging from Africa and across Asia. There are five subspecies, this one in Thailand being of the leucomelanura subspecies.
