As it strutted out into the open, the splendour of its beauty was in full glorious display.
This male Grey Peacock-pheasant is relatively large at an average of 64 cm. It has orange facial skin and a funky-looking bushy crest that droops forward. Its overall plumage is greyish brown. Its wings are dotted with neat rows of shimmering purplish-blue, while its tail is embellished with iridescent bluish-green eyespots called ocelli. Peacock-pheasants get their name from these "eye-spots". The latter is put to good use in spectacular courtship displays.
Grey Peacock pheasants are shy terrestrial birds inhabiting dense evergreen forests. They are often found in pairs, quietly foraging for seeds, fruits and invertebrates on the forest floor.
They are residents of north-east India, Bangladesh and parts of South-east Asia.
It is the national bird of Myanmar.
