I was very happy to have the chance to observe this very interesting behaviour exhibited by a Saddle-billed Stork during its nesting.
One of the parents had gathered water in its large bill and throat. Standing over the nest, it actively regurgitated water onto the nest and eggs. This action serves to lower the temperature on very warm days.
In the wild, Saddlebills are known to practise this method of thermoregulation. I was delighted to be able to witness this, albeit in an artificial setting.
Although Saddlebills are widespread residents of sub-Sahara Africa, its conservation status is listed as Near Threatened.
These Saddlebills are housed at the Heart of Africa aviary at Mandai Bird Paradise, Singapore.
