Unlike her male counterpart's solid blue head, the female Green-backed Kingfisher sports rufous facial markings. She has a blue throat instead of white. The rest of her plumage otherwise resembles the male - a green back contrasting with deep orange over her underparts.
She was also a very quiet & still kingfisher, perching unobtrusively in the mid-canopy of the forest, awaiting her next meal that might serendipitously fly or crawl by.
The Green-backed Kingfisher is endemic to Sulawesi, dweller of lowland tropical forests.
Its status is classified as Near Threatened, due largely to a loss of natural habitat as a result of deforestation.
