It was a thrill to spot this owl perched on a tall tree by the roadside. Amazingly, it didn't fly off even when a convoy of motorcyclists heading for a village wedding zoomed past noisily.
With an average size of 15 cm, this small owl is adorned with brown plumage marked with scattered pale spots and dark streaks .
It inhabits the understorey of forests and forest edges, often near villages and plantations. This probably explains why I was able to meet one by the roadside, as this road bordered a forest patch.
The Sulawesi Scoped Owl is endemic to Sulawesi and its surrounding islands of Indonesia.
