I was overwhelmed with joy to be able to finally have proper meeting with a species I had longed to admire, the ravishingly handsome Banded Kingfisher.
This beautiful male didn't disappoint. He delighted me with a long perch, and charmed me by repeatedly raising and lowering his stunning blue crest. His blue crown contrasts with a brown face and white throat. His gorgeous black upperparts, wings and tail are lined with bright blue bands, while his underparts are a lovely rufous with an off-white centre patch. An all-red bill completes his outstanding looks.
Banded Kingfishers are forest kingfishers. Unlike other kingfishers, they do not need to be near water bodies. They hunt large insects and invertebrates, and occasionally even lizards.
They are residents of the lowland tropical forests of South East Asia.
