I felt incredibly blessed to meet this small group of male Sulawesi Dwarf Hornbills, as this species is known to be uncommon throughout its native range. It was their calls that alerted me to their presence. Astonishingly, they were perched on trees just lining the road side.
At an average of just 18 inches, it is a relatively small hornbill, thus earning it its name. Apart from a prominent yellow face and throat, as well as a yellow bill with black markings, the male is otherwise all black in colour. His female counterpart lacks the yellow adornment and is all black with a darker bill.
It is endemic to Sulawesi and the surrounding islands, where it is known to exist as two subspecies.
Worldwide, its conservation status is listed as Vulnerable.
