It was such a treat to meet these eye-catching Pied Kingfishers. A small flock of 3-4 individuals were hanging out by the river. They were flying around and along the waterway. While perching, they started calling to each other, demonstrating gregarious behaviour that was really fun to watch.
Their black & white plumage, coupled with prominent black crests, made them stand out beauties. The male has prominent double breast bands, while the female has a single broken breast band.
These are water kingfishers, feeding primarily on fish, but also taking in crustaceans and invertebrates such as insect larvae. They are known for their hovering hunting technique.
Pied Kingfishers have a wide range of distribution, ranging from Africa and across Asia. There are five subspecies, this one in Thailand being of the leucomelanura subspecies.
