Eclipse Day is here! We'll first give an update on the prospects for clear skies across the totality path.
An active stretch of severe weather is on tap for the southern US beginning today (Monday, April 8) through Thursday (April 11) as a strong trough makes its way across the region, acting upon rich Gulf moisture. The SPC has outlined Enhanced Risks (level 3/5) for each of the next three days.
Today, severe storms with an all-hazards threat are expected along and south of a warm front draped across the Red River region, while a separate area of supercells is expected closer to the dryline across northwest Texas. Very large to giant hail will be the main threat, especially within the latter area, while the tornado threat may be maximized farther east as the low-level jet ramps up after dark.
The greatest risk shifts east across east Texas and Louisiana tomorrow. A rather messy storm mode may preclude a greater threat, but all hazards are on the table with tomorrow's convection, including the threat for very large hail and a few tornadoes, some of which may be strong.
While Tuesday's convective progression will have drastic impacts on what happens Wednesday, a corridor of elevated significant severe potential is possible from Louisiana into Alabama. This could feature damaging winds and strong tornadoes, but uncertainty remains on how things will play out Tuesday into Wednesday. The threat continues Thursday across both the Southeast and a separate area near the surface low centered on Ohio.
