I have to admit that I have never played a Fatal Frame game and with the remake of part 2 coming in March, I wanted to redeem myself and archive the best entry in the series. According to many Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly is the best of all the Fatal Frame games and the introduction to this universe was very positive.
We play as Mio who has traveled to a mysterious town in rural Japan together with her twin Mayu. Ghost sightings occur while exploring the village and red butterflies can be seen flying around. Slowly but surely you learn the town's history and a brutal ritual that directly impacts Mio and Mayu's bond. I thought it was a very interesting way to portray twins and the story was very original. The gameplay consists of solving puzzles by finding key items and capturing ghosts on camera by confronting them directly.
The scary part about the ghosts is that you HAVE to look at them in order to take them down. You do the most damage when you take a picture right before they strike, so you are waiting for the ghost to get closer and closer which really gave me shivers.
The controls are a bit clunky and the English voice acting is definitely not that great, but in general Fatal Frame 2 lasted a positive impression. I do think that nostalgia has a lot to do with why people love it so much as not everything has aged that well, but I definitely think that the remake can up the ante with better camera and controls.

Today we have something very special to archive. Back when I was a teenager one of my favorite anime was Cowboy Bebop. It was the first time I realized that anime and cartoons also existed that were not necessarily targeting a young audience. The style of the characters was different and the storylines were deep and complex. The cyberpunk style mixed with jazzy tones and wild west themes make Cowboy Bebop still a unique anime that has never been copied.
I was therefore surprised to find out that an actual game was made for the PlayStation 2, but it was never released in the west. Only recently was a translation offered online and with that I could finally archive Cowboy Bebop Serenade of Reminiscence and present it to a western audience. The game plays like a beat em up and we follow our heroes Spike, Faye and Jet as we look for a treasure that is linked to a mysterious song called Diamonds.
The games beat em up action can be a bit repetitive, but I was surprised at how fluid and beautifully animated the combos were. You get to play as all three characters and their move set differs greatly. There are also sections where you get to shoot and these are a bit less optimal as the controls are clunky and the AI is a bit iffy. Then there are moments where you get to steer some flying vehicles and these offer some nice, little variety. Some of the moments can be a bit frustrating and outlast their welcome like when you are controlling Jet and need to find bombs on your ship. Other than that it nails the atmosphere and all the charactes are voiced by their original cast.
It shows great potential and maybe someday we will get a cowboy bebop game with current game technology.
