About two years ago I archived the original Beyond Good & Evil and absolutely loved it. Recently I had the urge to revisit this wonderful game and luckily the 20th Anniversary Edition promised to deliver the same experience with some better graphics. And the game is still one of a kind and stands the test of time beautifully.
We play as Jade who works at an orphanage on a distant planet when suddenly their home gets invaded by aliens. Now it is up to Jade and her adorable uncle to join the resistance and fight back against the alien invader. You do this by experiencing wonderful and varied gameplay in a great action adventure. There are a ton of minigames and side content to do as well like hovercraft races, photographing wildlife or taking part in space combat.
The world is so unique and full of detail and it really makes me nostalgic to that golden age of gaming during the PlayStation 2, Gamecube and original Xbox era. I would love to play more games like this, but I honestly do not think there is any other game that blends the different elements so well as this game. My only critique is that the second part of the game focuses too much on stealth gameplay which makes it a bit repetitive. But other than that it is a game that any gamer has to experience at least once.

Today we have something very special to archive. Back when I was a teenager one of my favorite anime was Cowboy Bebop. It was the first time I realized that anime and cartoons also existed that were not necessarily targeting a young audience. The style of the characters was different and the storylines were deep and complex. The cyberpunk style mixed with jazzy tones and wild west themes make Cowboy Bebop still a unique anime that has never been copied.
I was therefore surprised to find out that an actual game was made for the PlayStation 2, but it was never released in the west. Only recently was a translation offered online and with that I could finally archive Cowboy Bebop Serenade of Reminiscence and present it to a western audience. The game plays like a beat em up and we follow our heroes Spike, Faye and Jet as we look for a treasure that is linked to a mysterious song called Diamonds.
The games beat em up action can be a bit repetitive, but I was surprised at how fluid and beautifully animated the combos were. You get to play as all three characters and their move set differs greatly. There are also sections where you get to shoot and these are a bit less optimal as the controls are clunky and the AI is a bit iffy. Then there are moments where you get to steer some flying vehicles and these offer some nice, little variety. Some of the moments can be a bit frustrating and outlast their welcome like when you are controlling Jet and need to find bombs on your ship. Other than that it nails the atmosphere and all the charactes are voiced by their original cast.
It shows great potential and maybe someday we will get a cowboy bebop game with current game technology.
