Today we archive a very special project that was a long time in the making. Mouse P.I. For Hire is a loveletter to boomer FPS games like Doom and Wolfenstein. But now it is packaged in a lovely and charming setting of the rubber hose animation. The insipration was obviously Steamboat Willie and the black and white filter adds to the overal experience.
We play as private investigator Jack Pepper who uncovers a mystery that will have him travel to movie sets, haunted swamps, stinky sewers and even to hell. The art, music and overall presentation is absolutely stunnig.
Troy Baker does an excellent job with the voice acting and it was a delight to see what each new level had in store for me. The action plays much like a boomer FPS where you would go from area to area and have to fend off against waves of enemies before being able to continue.
I have to admit that I am not the biggest fan of this genre and so there were at times were it became a bit repetitive for me. There are certain moments where you have to do some detective work and interrogate some folks or snap pictures in secret, but I certainly wished there were more of these moments throughout the game.
There are satisfying upgrade mechanics and there are also plenty of side quests and minigames to take on. I would say that it was worth the long wait!
