HOT WHEELS 21059 911 GT3 Cup
I'm taking on a badly damaged Hot Wheels Porsche 911 GT3 Cup casting that has clearly seen better days. With broken A-pillars, bent axles, a missing rear wing and heavily scratched paintwork, this little Porsche looks destined for the scrap box. Instead, I repair the damaged bodywork, fit replacement wheels and affix a new rear wing before transforming it into a replica of the number 75 Manthey Racing / Gunnar Racing Porsche 911 GT3-R that competed in the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Introduced for the 996 generation in 1999, the 911 GT3 line was developed as a lightweight, driver-focused performance model. It combined Porsche's motorsport expertise with road-going usability. Alongside the road car, Porsche produced the 911 GT3 Cup for one-make racing championships before evolving the platform into the 911 GT3 R, a more advanced endurance racing machine designed for GT competition around the world. The GT3 and its derivatives would go on to become some of the most successful customer racing Porsches ever built.
The team featured in this build is Manthey Racing, one of Porsche's most successful racing partners. Founded by former racing driver Olaf Manthey in Germany, the team has enjoyed decades of success in GT and endurance racing, becoming synonymous with Porsche competition programmes. Manthey's relationship with Le Mans stretches back to the late 1990s, where it quickly established itself as a formidable force in GT racing.
The 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans entry I recreate was driven by Michael Brockman, Mike Lauer and Gunnar Jeannette. The American-backed Porsche qualified 47th out of 48 starters. Despite starting near the back of the grid, the team battled through the full 24 hours to reach the finish, completing 261 laps. The car was classified 27th overall and finished sixth in the LMGT category, making it the final classified finisher of the race.
