As soon as I find some British Touring Car Championship decals based on a 1990s livery, I absolutely have to go out, find the appropriate casting and set to work on making a replica BTCC racer. That was certainly the case when I stumbled across some 1994 season Volvo 850 estate decals designed for this Hot Wheels model.

The 850 estate racer was unique. In 1994 with the rest of the field racing in saloons, Volvo set off an audible series of gasps at the press conference unveiling their entry for that years championship. Volvo were a new manufacturer to the BTCC alongside Alfa Romeo who would go on to win that years title, although that was shrouded in controversy. The estate was a very unusual choice but it quickly became a fan favourite. However, it was not the most competitive car with two fifth placed finishes the best it could manage from drivers Jan Lammers and Rickard Rydell. Volvo ended the season in eighth place of ten manufacturers with Rydell 14th and Lammers 15th in the final drivers' standings. The estate was dropped in favour of the saloon for 1995 with new aerodynamic regulations the death knell of the boxy wagon.

The road-going 850 was introduced in 1991 as a saloon with the estate following a year later. They were both built until 1997 when they were replaced by the S70 and V70 respectively.

The Hot Wheels model was introduced in 2020 and was designed by the late Rya Asada. It is loosely based on the 850 R wagon and initially came in a livery reminiscent of the BTCC car. It even carried the number 14 of Jan Lammers.
