MINI-DINKY No. 19 MGB restoration
Introduced by Dinky Toys in the late 1960s, the Mini-Dinky range was designed to take on Matchbox by offering highly detailed miniature vehicles in a compact scale, all the while produced at low cost in Hong Kong. The No. 19 MGB Roadster captured the clean lines and sporting character of the real car, featuring opening parts and excellent detail. Surviving examples often show the effects of decades of play or in the worst cases, metal fatigue, making them fascinating restoration projects.
The full-size MGB was produced by the British Motor Corporation and later British Leyland between 1962 and 1980. Combining attractive styling, straightforward mechanicals and affordable performance, the MGB became one of the best-selling sports cars of its era, with over half a million examples built. Its popularity on both sides of the Atlantic helped establish it as a British motoring icon.
For this restoration, I strip the model back and return it to its original blue finish, carefully polish the metal base that forms the grille and front and rear bumpers, refurbish the attractive spun wire wheels, and repair the damaged windscreen. The aim is not to create a perfect example, but to preserve the character of the model while bringing it back to a condition that does justice to this classic Mini-Dinky release.
