What if you want to go ahead and play some of your absolute favorite retro video games on a completely new piece of dedicated handheld hardware? Well, that is exactly where the Evercade ecosystem comes in. But today, we are taking a close look at their incredibly popular sister product line. This is the Super Pocket from HyperMegaTech!

If you are unfamiliar with these awesome little devices, they are roughly the size of a classic Game Boy, making them incredibly pocketable, and they play undeniably great games. Today, a massive new version was just announced, and we are currently looking over the details on the CastleMania Games website.

Enter the Super Pocket: Rare Edition
As you can see in the overview video, this is the officially licensed Rare Edition, proudly displaying the legendary Banjo-Kazooie front and center. But this immediately raises a massive question for retro gaming fans: Banjo-Kazooie fundamentally needs an analog stick for its 3D platforming, right? Well, according to HyperMegaTech! and Rare, this new handheld has been fully optimized to allow you to play the N64 classic seamlessly using a traditional D-pad. How exactly they pulled off mapping those precise analog inputs to a standard D-pad without ruining the flow of the game remains to be seen, but I am incredibly intrigued!

14 Built-In Rare Classics
This tiny system is packing a massive punch. In addition to Banjo-Kazooie, you are getting a total of 14 different classic titles spanning Rare's incredible history—from their early 8-bit home computer days to their console mega-hits.

Here is the amazing lineup built right into the system:

Banjo-Kazooie
Battletoads
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
Conker's Pocket Tales
R.C. Pro-Am II (I absolutely love to see this one included; I am a huge fan of this game!)
Cobra Triangle
Snake Rattle 'n' Roll
Solar Jetman
Jetpac
Lunar Jetman
Atic Atac
Knight Lore

Hardware, Expansion, and Evercade Compatibility
First of all, I have to talk about the physical design. I absolutely love the look of this specific edition. The bright primary color scheme actually reminds me a little bit of Mario, but it gives the unit a wonderfully nostalgic, toy-like aesthetic that fits perfectly with the Rare branding.

But the absolute coolest feature of the Super Pocket line is its expandability. Because this is the exact same hardware architecture as the other Super Pockets, it is fully integrated into the Evercade ecosystem! If you take out the spacer on the back of the unit, it reveals a fully functional cartridge slot. This means that after you conquer the 14 built-in games, you can expand your library with practically any Evercade cartridge (with the exception of a very small handful of early cartridges that are no longer licensed). You instantly have access to hundreds of retro titles!

Pricing and Pre-Orders
This looks absolutely phenomenal, and the price point is just as good. You are getting a highly capable, dedicated retro handheld, 14 officially licensed top-tier Rare games built-in, and the ability to expand your physical game library—all for just $69.99! Pre-orders are live right now over at CastleMania Games and other Evercade retailers ahead of its June launch, so keep an eye out if you want to secure one for your collection.

I want to hear from you! What do you think about the Super Pocket Rare Edition? Are you going to consider pre-ordering this unit? And most importantly, how do you think they pulled off translating the precise movement of Banjo-Kazooie to a traditional D-pad versus an analog stick? Let's discuss it down in the comments below!
