The June 2026 Nintendo Direct finally dropped today, and we got some new Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 News. But, to be perfectly honest, the broadcast as a whole left me feeling a bit underwhelmed by the upcoming release schedule. Outside of a quick look at the upcoming Switch Sports Resort, there just wasn't a whole lot in the main showcase to get incredibly excited about. However, Nintendo managed to pull off a massive, genuine surprise at the end by announcing an immediate, playable gameplay demo for Star Fox on the brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 console. Today, we are downloading this surprise drop, jumping straight into the cockpit of the Arwing, and sharing our raw, honest first impressions as we played the demo of the next-gen Star Fox in this First Look!

First and foremost, we have to talk about the presentation because visually, this game looks absolutely stunning. The graphical leap on the Nintendo Switch 2 is on full display here, utilizing modern cinematic lighting effects, incredibly high-fidelity environment textures, dynamic particle fields, and gorgeous planetary backdrops that bring space to life like never before. Right away during the opening cinematic preview sequence, the game hits players with a massive lore drop that will definitely get classic franchise fans talking: this story is a full-blown prequel focusing heavily on Fox McCloud's dad, James McCloud, and the original team. This introductory section gives players some excellent, much-needed narrative background on exactly how Andross, the original Star Fox crew, and the entire Lylat System ended up becoming bitter, sworn enemies in the first place. It is a fantastic creative direction that adds a lot of weight to the universe.

When it comes to the core gameplay mechanics, things feel incredibly responsive—in fact, almost a little too touchy and sensitive right out of the gate. The precision haptic feedback on the new Switch 2 controller feels phenomenal when you are firing your laser cannons or executing a perfectly timed barrel roll to deflect enemy fire. However, the game severely slows down the narrative momentum by forcing you into a mandatory flight training and tutorial section that drags on for more than ten minutes. If you are a veteran player who has already played Star Fox on the Super Nintendo, the Nintendo 64, or the Nintendo 3DS, you are going to find this entire introductory training sequence incredibly tedious and unskippable. To make matters worse, the game even forces you to try out a new "mouse mode" motion control style that is entirely too sensitive, touchy, and frustrating to handle during intense space dogfights, making it hard to line up your shots or avoid obstacles.

Once you finally survive the training gauntlet and get into the actual playable demo missions, the classic orchestrated soundtrack music sounds phenomenal, hitting all the right nostalgia notes, and the graphical presentation continues to impress as you fly through asteroid fields and enemy fleets. However, after finishing mission two, a real realization sets in: despite the gorgeous new coat of paint, the updated engine, and the prequel story framing, the core gameplay loop heavily mirrors the first and second games of the franchise. It looks pretty and it plays decently, but at least in this small vertical slice of a demo, it doesn't feel like a completely new reinvention of the franchise or a massive gameplay evolution. It is a beautiful trip down memory lane, but it leaves you wondering if the full game will offer more depth.

What are your thoughts on this next-gen revival? Have you downloaded the Star Fox demo on your Switch 2 yet? Did the June Nintendo Direct live up to your expectations, or were you left wanting more like I was? Let's talk about it down in the comments below!
