Today, we are exploring the streets of Layton, Utah, to visit two of the absolute best specialty collector shops in the state: Minus World Games and their fantastic new neighbor, Roscoe's Retro Toy Barn. If you are a fan of classic video games, vintage action figures, and 80s and 90s nostalgia, this is the ultimate retro store tour! Let's take a look as we dive into some great retro toy & game hunting and see if we re-collect some of our childhood favorites.
Our adventure kicks off right outside Minus World Games before heading into Roscoe's Retro Toy Barn. This dedicated vintage toy store has only been open for about a year, but they have already curated an incredibly impressive inventory of rare collectibles. Right off the bat, we spotted some amazing pieces, including a Shattered Glass Optimus Prime and a classic GoBot figure—which instantly brought back a massive wave of childhood memories! Their display cases are loaded with incredible pop culture artifacts, including a fantastic collection of vintage Star Trek figures and the legendary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Technodrome! If you are a Star Wars fan, their display featuring the classic Star Wars Ewok Village is a sight to behold, complete with a vintage R2-D2, Chief Chirpa, and several other iconic characters. Transformers fans will also be thrilled to see some absolutely beautiful G1 Transformers sitting on the shelf, including a pristine Perceptor. But the heavy nostalgia is not just limited to action figures and sci-fi space battles; they also have a fantastic section dedicated entirely to classic properties like Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and Lemon Meringue! And you absolutely have to appreciate the amazing, hilarious crossover fan art they have on display, featuring Peppermint Patty delivering a devastating kick to Mortal Kombat's Scorpion!
After thoroughly exploring that vintage toy wonderland, we step back inside Minus World Games to hunt for some classic video game pickups. This store is a retro gamer's absolute paradise. The aesthetic of the shop is incredible, featuring beautifully decorated walls covered in vintage video game posters and Donkey Kong wall art. It just makes the shopping vibe so much fun, and you can even purchase some of the posters they have on display! My primary mission for this specific game hunting trip is tracking down Nintendo 64 games to test out on my M64 console. I quickly spot a copy of Spider-Man for the N64 priced at $37. It is one of those titles I do not completely remember playing back in the day, leaving me to wonder: do I take the risk and pick it up?
Digging deeper into the massive glass display cases, we uncover some incredible, highly obscure retro gaming treasures! First up is a true rarity to find in the wild: a loose copy of Zero Wing for the Sega Mega Drive priced at $40. While it is incredibly tempting, I already own the phenomenal re-release from the Retro-Bit Toaplan Collection, so I decided to responsibly leave it behind. We also spot a highly unique Sega Mark III Sega Card for the Japanese version of the Sega Master System.
The ultimate game hunt continues as we pivot over to a surprisingly robust selection of classic Atari Jaguar games! They had a solid stack of titles including Checkered Flag, White Men Can't Jump, and the awesome NBA Jam Tournament Edition. But the absolute showstopper for me was their pristine TurboGrafx-16 section! Minus World Games had a beautiful lineup of highly sought-after TG-16 games, featuring heavy hitters like TaleSpin, Parasol Stars, Battle Royale, Double Dungeons, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, Ys I & II, and Valis! That copy of TaleSpin definitely caught my eye. To top it all off, they also boast an awesome selection of imported N64 and Super Famicom games.
Every single time I visit Minus World Games and Roscoe's Retro Toy Barn, I am blown away by the incredible selection and the amazing local gaming community vibe. Whether you are actively building a dedicated retro game room or trying to complete a vintage childhood toy collection, these two stores are absolute must-visit collector destinations in Utah.
