Today is Black Monday in the video game industry. If you are unfamiliar with what Black Monday means in the world of sports, like in the NFL and Major League Baseball, it is generally the day when coaches and managers get fired at the end of the season. Unfortunately, today Microsoft let a massive amount of people go across their entire gaming division. I am not rejoicing in this news at all. While I have stated in the past that Microsoft and Xbox are not my brand of choice, I truly appreciate what they bring to the gaming industry as a whole. There are millions of people who absolutely love the Xbox platform, and for those who are affected by these massive layoffs, both as loyal gamers and as hardworking employees, I feel absolutely terrible for all of them.
This official announcement was sent out earlier today by the new head of XBOX, Asha Sharma, titled "Resetting Xbox," and it was distributed to Microsoft employees globally as Microsoft slashes staff and spins off studios. The memo states: "Team, we are beginning the most significant restructure in Xbox history. After careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to reduce our team by approximately 3,200 employees throughout fiscal year 2027. This will include approximately 1,600 role eliminations today, July the 6th. And in addition, four studios will leave Xbox to new management. I recognize that a year-long restructuring creates additional challenges. Unfortunately, it is not possible to make all the necessary changes in a single day, and I wanted to be direct about the scale."
The leadership went on to state that they are operating at margins that are three to ten times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses. That is a massive financial gap, especially when you consider that competitors like Nintendo actually profit on every single Nintendo Switch console that is sold. Xbox entered the ninth console generation with a significantly smaller install base and a much higher cost structure. To combat this and attempt to grow, they bet heavily on Game Pass, a multiplatform approach, and a broader portfolio of content. While those businesses have created some meaningful value, they did not grow at the pace Microsoft expected.
By pushing a digital-only approach with Game Pass and heavily relying on subscription models, they ultimately did not grow the hobby. It is also incredibly important to point out that Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, and King will now report directly to Asha Sharma, who is now the head of Xbox. That corporate shift clearly indicates exactly where their priorities lie moving forward. They clearly see their financial future relying heavily on massive mobile and family-friendly properties like Minecraft and Candy Crush.
This corporate restructuring reminds me of the early 2000s and the movie Office Space. The memo mentioned that today, in some parts of the company, work passes through as many as 14 layers of management. Having 14 layers of management is completely absurd. I feel terrible for the talented developers and staff who are affected and have lost their jobs today.
However, there are much more serious undertones here for the entire industry. Modern gaming has simply gotten way too expensive to produce and maintain. I have seen very similar things happen in the RC industry. Companies need to figure out how to make gaming fun, affordable, and approachable for absolutely everybody again. Look at the Nintendo Wii as a perfect historical example. Graphically, it was the most underpowered console of its generation, yet they sold an absolute ton of hardware. Why? Because the games were highly accessible, affordable, and most importantly, they were genuinely fun.
The gaming hobby is simply not healthy right now, and major systemic changes need to be made across the board. Seeing all of these massive studio spin-offs and thousands of layoffs also makes me wonder: what on earth was Phil Spencer actually doing during all those years he was in charge at Xbox? We need to have a serious conversation about the future of the video game industry. Let me know your thoughts on this entire situation down below in the comments.
