Alright, I finally broke down and did it! Yes, I did once again buy a copy of Star Fox. Sure, I already have it in my retro collection on the Super Nintendo (SNES), the Super Famicom, the Nintendo 64, and even the original Switch with those classic titles being available on Nintendo Switch Online. But today, we are checking out exactly how the highly anticipated first level looks in the brand new Star Fox on the powerful new Nintendo Switch 2!
Even though I had already played the extensive demo, the full game initially tries to make me go through the training mode tutorial again, which I am not happy about. Let's check the options. Will it let me actually quit the training flight? It looks like it will! Thankfully, I don't have to do the basic flight tutorial all over again. Thank goodness for that simple quality-of-life feature!
Jumping right into the iconic first level, I will confidently say this game looks absolutely beautiful. We do have to talk about the pricing structure, though: Nintendo is charging $59.99 for a physical copy versus $49.99 for the digital download. Honestly, playing through this opening stage, it definitely feels exactly like the very first game, which I pretty much expected. But the visual upgrades are striking. The water droplets splashing directly on the screen behind your Arwing ship look great and add a fantastic layer of visual immersion.
I will say, even though this gameplay feels very much like Star Fox on the Wii U, it has a completely different lighting aspect and overall tone. The environment definitely looks significantly darker and moodier. Normally, I don't like when developers make things dark just for the sake of being gritty, but in this specific remake, I think it actually fits perfectly. It gives you that cinematic look and the heavy feeling that, alright, this peaceful planet has truly been ravaged.
I also really love the fact that while the music has the unmistakable nostalgic feeling of the legendary original soundtrack, it is definitely a much more grand, sweeping orchestral arrangement. You would expect that high level of audio production value with a next-generation system like the Switch 2!
As we are flying through the scenic waterfall section, I have to point it out again: I really like the rendering of the water droplets on the display. It is a very nice visual touch. It definitely makes the whole flying experience feel far more real. Even the subtle little sound effect improvements sound fantastic.
And wow, I just noticed this incredible detail too! If you look closely at the ship, the elevons on the back of the Arwing actually go up and down dynamically as you climb and fall through the air. That is definitely a nice attention to detail.
We are pretty much flying through the very end of the first level here, and we beat the first boss encounter. Overall, I think this game does look and sound absolutely great. However, I still do not think that it justifies being a full-priced $60 physical game or a $50 digital game. I really think it should be priced as a $30 digital game, or maybe $40 for the physical version. At least at this point in the playthrough, it feels like we are just playing the first and second games all over again, and we have experienced this many times before. This really feels like more of the same and, at least initially, doesn't really add any innovation.
I am actually going to do a massive side-by-side comparison video coming up, so make sure you hit that subscribe button! We are going to compare the graphics, sound, and gameplay of the first level on the Super Nintendo, N64, Wii U, and Switch 2. You will not want to miss it!
Let me know down in the comments: Have you picked up a copy of the new Star Fox for the Switch 2? If so, have you beaten it yet? What do you think of it? Overall, I think it is very pretty, but nothing original. Leave your thoughts down below in the comments!
