In a lot of ways, the evolution of video games mirrors the history of movies. We started with the "silent film" era—classic titles on the NES like Super Mario Bros. where there was little to no voice interaction at all. If you wanted dialogue, you were reading text boxes.

While add-ons like the Sega CD experimented heavily with heavily compressed FMV (Full Motion Video) cutscenes, it wasn't until the 32-bit and 64-bit generation that things truly changed. The Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, and Sony PlayStation are where voice acting finally came into its own, shifting from a gimmicky feature into a seamless, impactful part of gameplay.

Today on RoXolid Productions, we are taking a look back at the golden era of video game audio. Here are three of the greatest—and one of the absolute worst—voice clips in retro gaming history!

1. The Ultimate Advice: "Do a Barrel Roll!" (Star Fox 64)
When the original Star Fox launched on the Super Nintendo, the Super FX chip changed the game with its polygonal graphics. But when Star Fox 64 hit the Nintendo 64, it completely revolutionized the cinematic feel of gaming with full voice acting. Between Falco being an absolute jerkface and Slippy constantly needing help, you had Peppy Hare delivering what is arguably the most famous video game quote of all time: "Do a barrel roll!"

It is so incredibly iconic that if you type that exact phrase into Google today, your entire web browser will physically spin upside down. If you are a gamer of any era, you know this line.

2. The Underdog's Victory: "I'm-a Luigi, Number One!" (Mario Kart 64)
Sticking with the N64, Mario Kart 64 was one of the first games where I genuinely loved the voice acting. It was fun, it was cute, and it perfectly fit the chaotic multiplayer vibe. But to hear one of the best lines, you actually have to pull off a victory with the eternal runner-up. When you secure a win as Luigi, you are treated to his triumphant, joyous shout: "I'm-a Luigi, Number One!" It was exactly what you wanted to hear after surviving a barrage of Blue Shells.

3. The Nefarious Nag: "Hey! Listen!" (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
Now, before we get to our absolute favorite, we have to talk about the dark side of 64-bit voice acting. What happens when a character just won't stop talking? I think most of us can agree that Navi from Ocarina of Time remains one of the most annoying characters in video game history. Her relentless, high-pitched "Hey! Listen!" interrupting your adventure has driven countless players insane. We get it, Navi, we know where the objective is. Tell us what you want already!

4. The Grand Entrance: "It's-a Me, Mario!" (Super Mario 64)
There are so many iconic Mario lines over the years—he truly is the Mickey Mouse of the video game industry. But nothing beats booting up Super Mario 64 for the very first time and hearing that flawless, welcoming introduction: "It's-a me, Mario!" Followed closely by his energetic "Here we go!" and "Yahoo!" as you triple-jump around the castle grounds. The legendary Charles Martinet absolutely nailed this performance, creating an audio signature that has defined the character for decades.

Now, I want to hear from YOU!
