I’ll be the first to admit that I was never the biggest comic book guy growing up. Back in the day, I was flipping through Transformers comics, but that was about the extent of it. Like millions of others, I eventually fell in love with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through the movies rather than the printed page. However, there has always been one constant in my life: if there was a Marvel video game out there, I was going to play it.
Lately, I have been absolutely hooked on Marvel Cosmic Invasion for the Nintendo Switch 2. Developed by the masters of the modern retro beat 'em up over at Tribute Games and Dotemu, it is a phenomenal experience. But while playing that modern masterpiece, it got me thinking about the past. What about the classic Marvel games that didn't suck? That brings us to a true hidden gem in the 8-bit library: Captain America and the Avengers for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
A Different Kind of Superhero Game
If you have never seen or played the NES version of Captain America and the Avengers, you might be confusing it with its arcade counterpart. In 1991, Data East released the arcade version as a traditional 4-player beat 'em up. However, when it came time to bring the game to the NES console, Data East completely shifted gears. Instead of a scaled-down brawler, they created a tightly focused, side-scrolling action platformer.
While Marvel Cosmic Invasion feels like a spiritual successor to classic beat 'em ups like Final Fight or Double Dragon, this 8-bit NES adventure feels much closer to the run-and-gun platforming of Contra mixed with the methodical navigation of Bionic Commando. It’s a unique blend that stands out in the massive NES library and proves that licensed games don't always have to be generic cash grabs.
Gameplay Mechanics: Shield and Bow
In this specific NES storyline, Iron Man and Vision have been captured by the villainous Mandarin and the Red Skull. It is up to you to save the universe by taking control of either Captain America or Hawkeye. The character-switching mechanic is actually really clever for the time. You navigate a top-down map screen, and if both characters are on the same spot, you can freely tag between them before entering a stage.
Each character brings a distinct playstyle to the table that completely changes how you approach a level:
Captain America: The close-range powerhouse. Cap can throw his iconic vibranium shield like a boomerang to take out enemies and can even use it to block incoming projectiles, giving you a strong defensive option when the screen gets crowded.
Hawkeye: The long-range specialist. Hawkeye fires his arrows across the screen and, crucially, he can fire them diagonally, giving him incredible control over the airspace and hard-to-reach enemies.
The play control is incredibly tight, allowing for precise jumps and attacks. You never feel like you're battling the controller, which is a massive compliment for an action-platformer from 1991.
Presentation and Legacy
One of the standout features of this game is the audio and visual presentation. The character sprites are vibrant, detailed, and immediately recognizable, successfully capturing the comic book aesthetic despite the hardware limitations. Furthermore, the soundtrack composed by Data East is genuinely fantastic. It has that fast-paced, driving 8-bit energy that keeps you pushing forward through the stages. Make sure to grab those extra bonus points when you see them! Yeah, baby!
I am pretty sure I originally picked up my physical copy of this game at the MO Game Con many years ago. It has been a permanent fixture in my collection ever since, and I am so glad I own it. Unlike some other licensed games from that era, it remains relatively affordable and accessible for physical media collectors. Sadly, this specific NES action-platformer version has not been re-released on any modern collections or the Nintendo Switch Online service. If you want to play it today, you need to track down the original cartridge or look into alternative retro hardware solutions.

Whether you are a die-hard MCU fan, a comic book historian, or just a retro gamer looking for a solid 8-bit platformer, Captain America and the Avengers is incredibly underrated.
