You can file this squarely under things I honestly never thought I would actually own in my lifetime! Over the years as a retro gaming collector and enthusiast, there have been a few legendary hardware white whales that I assumed would always just stay on my wishlist. I never thought I would own a classic Famicom—yet now I have a couple of them in the studio. I never thought I would own a Famicom Disk System, a Virtual Boy, or an Atari Jaguar—thanks to the incredible kindness of one of our viewers, I managed to check those off the list too! But recently, while scrolling through my local Facebook Marketplace, I spotted something pop up that made me do a complete double-take. When I saw the listing price, I literally said out loud, "There is no way this is right!"
What was it? Well, it is none for-sure-other than the official, ultra-rare Sony PlayStation 3D Display Monitor!
For those of you who might not know what this piece of gaming hardware is, this is an official Sony PlayStation-branded widescreen monitor designed specifically during the peak of the PlayStation 3 era back in late 2011. It features a crisp 1080p full high-definition resolution panel, but the absolute coolest feature is that it boasts a lightning-fast 240Hz refresh rate, giving you super smooth motion and performance for gaming. On the side of the unit, it comes equipped with multiple HDMI inputs as well as a component video input, making it amazingly versatile for legacy and modern retro consoles alike. It's a compact 24-inch display, but for a dedicated desk setup, personal gaming nook, or retro display station, this thing is locked in and looks gorgeous.
This unit comes straight from an era when stereoscopic 3D TVs and active-shutter glasses were all the rage in home entertainment. The monitor itself has some serious weight to it—it is definitely not a flimsy, lightweight plastic monitor. It even features built-in stereo speakers and a small built-in subwoofer, which makes total sense since it was engineered from the ground up as an all-in-one entertainment power suite for gamers.
When you look at the current collector market and online research, these official Sony PlayStation monitors command anywhere from $150 all the way up to $500 depending on the condition and whether they have the original stand and glasses. But here is the wildest part of the story: I paid significantly less for this holy grail monitor than you would spend on a brand new, average physical video game release for the PS5 or a new Nintendo Switch 2 title!
After hooking it up in the studio, I tested it alongside my MacBook Neo, a secondary Samsung monitor, and an extra display setup, pushing four distinct screens at once! It works beautifully for productivity, retro gaming, and modern workflows. I haven't quite decided yet whether I am going to keep it permanently in the studio setup or flip it down the road, but either way, I am strongly considering having it on display with me at the upcoming Michigan Retro Gaming Expo (MRGE) at the end of August!
