Nintendo has officially dropped huge news for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers! Three exciting additions are heading to the Nintendo Classics library, bringing a mix of GameCube nostalgia and lost retro gaming history. Heading to the platform are GameCube favorite Super Mario Sunshine, along with two previously unreleased, cancelled Virtual Boy titles: D-Hopper (originally known as Dragon Hopper) and Zero Racers.
First up on the Nintendo GameCube side of things, we have Super Mario Sunshine arriving on August 13th. As you can see, Mario’s tropical Isle Delfino adventure is making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube library. This is not the first time we have had access to Super Mario Sunshine on modern hardware, as it was previously re-released as part of the limited-run Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection alongside Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy on the original Nintendo Switch. While Super Mario Sunshine has always been a somewhat polarizing entry in the 3D Mario franchise—with some fans loving the FLUDD cleaning mechanics and others finding the controls and camera a bit finicky—it is still great to see it officially preserved on the Switch 2 Classics service for everyone who wants to jump back in.
However, for true retro gaming enthusiasts and lost media historians, the real highlight of this update lies in the two Virtual Boy additions arriving on August 4th. Nintendo is officially releasing two games that were originally completed back in 1996 but were cancelled and shelved when the Virtual Boy was discontinued.
The first unreleased Virtual Boy title is D-Hopper, an action-adventure game developed by Intelligent Systems that was originally titled Dragon Hopper. In this top-down 3D fantasy adventure, players take control of Prince Dorin, a young dragon prince embarking on a quest through the land of Fyun. His mission is to rescue his imprisoned family, fairies, and elemental spirits from captivity and bring down a corrupt prime minister and an evil regime. It is a fascinating piece of Nintendo history that was locked away in the vaults for three decades, and now retro fans finally get to play it on modern hardware.
The second unreleased Virtual Boy title is Zero Racers, a high-speed 3D racing game designed as an offshoot of the iconic F-Zero series. As the first F-Zero style game to feature true 3D wireframe graphics, Zero Racers lets players pick from four distinct characters and hovercars, racing against AI-controlled opponents across 15 tracks split across three competitive leagues. Getting an official, legitimate release for a cancelled 1996 F-Zero game on Nintendo Switch Online is a huge win for video game preservation!
