Whenever I wonder if heaven has a "taste", I always believe if must taste like ...
The first paw paw harvested in 2025. I encourage you to make a bucket list item to taste.fresh paw paw fruit some time in your life and to eat.it just the way I did in this video. Sure, you might be able to find "paw paw flavored" items like soft drinks, ice cream, breads, cakes, and the list.will continue to grow as paw paw seems to have suddenly exploded in popularity the last few years .... but those things will never be as great as.fresh fallen from the tree fruit. The manufactured items might have the essence of paw paw taste but not the complete complex flavor profile. If you keep an eye on eastern united states farmers markets around September into October, you might actually be able to find someone selling fresh fruit. Keep the seeds, they are easily germinated and you can grow your own trees although they generally take 7+ years to fruit from seeds.
Why you can't buy fresh pawpaw in the store: Because the skin is often bruised and discolored, people would find them ugly even if they could make it to a store shelf. But they would never make it to a store shelf anyways because as soon as they ripen and fall from the tree, they begin to ferment and their flavor will only last one or two days at room temperature. Refrigerated, they "might" keep up to a week but I think 3-4 days is more acceptable. They don't freeze well whole because their centers are so soft, and they don't ship well because they are so soft. You can freeze the pulp but again, in my experience eating paw paws for over 20 years, once the pulp is frozen they seem to lose something about their full taste profile ... the essence of pawpaw is still there, but not that complex taste profile everybody loves. So the best way to eat pawpaws, is right off the ground.
