Taylor Sheridan Told Kevin Costner to ‘Stick to Acting’ When He Protested a Dark Storyline
The fifth season of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone, whose second half is scheduled to broadcast later this year, was announced to be the show's finale last year. Sources reported that the reason for this was because Kevin Costner was leaving his part as the patriarch of the Dutton family in the critically acclaimed western.
However, Sheridan revealed the Golden Globe winner was quite unhappy during their back-and-forth in season 2, years before the purported behind-the-scenes turmoil made headlines.
Sheridan Taylor ignored the worries expressed by Kevin Costner.
Sheridan refuted earlier allegations that said the showrunner advised Kevin Costner to "stick to acting" when the actor expressed reservations about the path his character was taking. But the Mayor of Kingstown creator recalled how the star of The Bodyguard was upset when the showrunner refused to comply with his requests.
The character of John Dutton in Yellowstone: Season 2 takes a dark turn when he resorts to extreme means to save Tate Dutton. Costner was originally opposed to this dark turn in Dutton's story, even though it was obviously emotional. However, when he voiced his worries to the showrunner, Taylor Sheridan seemed unfazed.
"He was very upset and said the character wasn't going in the direction he wanted," Sheridan recounted from Season 2. "Kevin, do you recall that I told you that this is basically The Godfather on the biggest ranch in Montana?" I asked. Does the fact that the Godfather is murdering people really surprise you? He has adhered to Dutton's dedication to his family and lifestyle.
Even if their relationship did get more intense in season 2, Sheridan stated, "I think it's working," given that the third season returned the character to his original roots and won Costner a Golden Globe.
Before hanging up the phone, Kevin Costner did make one last ditch effort.
Rumors circulated after he left Yellowstone, suggesting that the actor's departure from the show may have been influenced by the apparent conflict between the actor and the showrunner.
The actor, however, said that before announcing his retirement, he made a desperate attempt to return for season 6, requesting his agents to have the studio pay him whatever amount they came up with. The figure they came up with, according to the Robin Hood star, was $12 million, but the studio passed on it.
"I couldn't help them any more," he said to People. They gave me a lower salary than in previous seasons despite our best efforts to bargain.
Additionally, the actor stated that creative problems were a significant cause in his departure, suggesting that the suspicions between Sheridan and Costner may not be entirely unfounded.
