Kevin Costner’s Passion Brings Horizon: An American Saga to Life
May 19 was the much anticipated debut of Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1 at the Cannes Film Festival. At a recent press conference, Kevin Costner, who both stars in and directed the movie, gave an insight into his commitment to the project.
Costner answered queries about his large financial donations to the movie during the conference. He disclosed that he was responsible for raising about $50 million of the movie's total budget. I had to make that choice, even though it wasn't an easy one. It makes me wonder why I have to do this. He said, "I think I'm making mainstream entertainment."
He went on to elaborate on his approach to investing personally in causes he supports. You may live your entire life attempting to add to your pile. And I haven't been all that good at it. Like everyone else, I want it to be very large. Costner said, "But not at the expense of not doing what I feel like I'd love to do."
Costner is dedicated to creating high-quality entertainment content despite the financial obstacles. He wrote, "There's commerce on my mind if no one will help me do it and I believe strongly in its entertainment value." He does, however, stress that his artistic impulses are not subordinated to commercial concerns.
During the press conference, Costner also discussed Horizon's immersive qualities and compared the show's vast narrative to those of the Western series Yellowstone. "The movie is a journey," he said. It's not a narrative film.
Costner stated that he halted work on Chapter 3 three days into the project in order to promote Chapter 1. Regarding the Cannes debut, he said, "It was so important to me to come to a place where movies are viewed in an open way."
Horizon: An American Saga looks like it's just getting started. Fans of epic Westerns can't wait for new chapters to reveal Costner's unwavering commitment and timeless vision.
