Powered metal turnout frogs on your model railroad help smaller locomotives through the switch. Every wheel is getting power all the time.
There are systems for routing power to the frog on DC, AC, and DCC model railroads. On DC, this is usually handled by power routing switches, which are often built into the switch machine. These switches are simple and effective. However, on manual through turnouts, this is a bit tricky. A micro-switch may be built into the linkage to move the points.
However, on DCC layouts, a circuit that controls the power routing automatically is possible. There is no linkage, no switching, and it just works in the background without the operator's knowledge.
