We are unboxing and testing a NEW Brelyn Locomotive Works 1:20.3 scale Silverton Northern railbus, best known as the "Casey Jones."
We bought this directly from Theo Berlyn on his eBay store. We have always felt Theo Berlyn made the finest brass locomotives. While they are no longer in production, BLW still has an eBay store and some models in stock.
The prototype Casey Jones has been restored and is operated in Silverton Colorado. Silverton is best known for the Durango and Silverton Railroad, originally part of the Denver and Rio Grande Western narrow-gauge.
At Silverton, the D and RGW connected with three short three-foot gauge railroads including the Silverton Northern, built by Russian Immigrant Otto Mears in 1889. Incorporated in 1895 as the Silverton Northern Railroad, the line was projected to run past Eureka to Animas Forks and on to Mineral Point and Lake City.
The Casey Jones did not belong to the Silverton Northern RR. It was designed and built by Clyde Jones owner of the Sunnyside Mill and Mine at Eureka. They built it in their shops in Eureka as an ambulance but later converted it to an 11-passenger railbus using a 4-wheel pilot truck, and a 2-wheel rear truck that was chain driven The brakes operated by turning a brake wheel that was in the place of the steering wheel. It was built with a Maxwell engine. The railbus had a jack built-in for turning it around, a system often used on small equipment. Surprisingly if a jack is placed exactly at the balance point under even a heavy vehicle when it is jacked up it can be rotated with ease even by a single person! , In 1918 after an accident, the current Cadillac Series 51 engine was substituted, as was the Cadillac transmission, driveshaft, and differential.
